My cat has pain after dewclaw suture removal. How long to heal?

It is still quite early to see a 100% bounce back to full use of the declawed paws. Sometimes it may take several weeks to see a full recovery. Increased pain and limping 5days after surgery may indicate infection in the wound, and she needs to be assessed by a vet for pain relief and possibly antibiotics. Given she has had an anesthetic, surgical trauma and pain and post operative medications the risk of any additional treatment to kittens would be minimal

The veterinarian will generally examine all the toes to look for any swelling or gapping from the incisions. Marvel cannot play with the other cat and he cannot have any running or jumping or else he may open up the incisions (he has 20 of them!). I do not recommend to let him sleep with you tonight in case he tries to jump off the bed. He needs to be confined to a small bathroom or a large dog kennel to prevent jumping. he should also use a paper or pine pelleted litter to avoid dust. It will take two weeks to heal in general. There are no human over-the-counter pain medications that are safe to use in cats, so I would definitely recommend calling your vet to let them know that she is still painful. He/she can prescribe a safe and effective pain medication for you to give at home for the next few days, such as gabapentin, buprenorphine, or tramadol.

Sorry to hear about Blackey. If it is just the nail that was torn, then they will grow back just fine overtime. If the actual dewclaw itself was torn, then they will not regrow. I would strongly recommend having the area looked at to see if they were ripped cleanly or if there is any bone currently exposed beyond the bed of the nail. If there is any active bleeding, a pressure bandage will likely be needed or in some cases sutures. Antibiotics, pain medications, and anti inflammatory medication will also likely be helpful in the treatment and recovery of your kitty. Hope this helps.

It's not that you shouldn't do the declaw procedure, it is just more uncomfortable for them. There are alternative options to declawing such as Soft Paws, in which caps are glued onto the nails to prevent scratching. These are easy to put on and last about 2 weeks. I would also provide plenty of scratch posts and toys to see if this helps. If you end up resorting to declawing, the post op recovery period tends to be longer in older cats. Give the pain medications as directed and try to keep her quiet. The more she moves initially, the more pressure on her paws which will result in discomfort.
