My cat has pain after dewclaw suture removal. How long to heal?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Mediumhair | Female | spayed | 11 months and 27 days old | 6 lbs

My cat's polydactyl claws were growing in a way that would be problems for the cat later in life. We opted to remove the 4 front claws. For some reason the vet also removed the back dewclaws. I noticed after a month the stitches had not absorbed on the dewclaws so back to the vet to have them removed. Now she is biting at the dewclaw area and jumps or runs as if she is having sharp pain. How long is it going to be until these heal again after the sutures were removed? No bleeding/swelling.

The dewclaws in the back may have been loosely attached which the operating veterinarian thought it would be best to have them removed. You would have to speak with the veterinarian to know for sure. The pain from declawing a kitten can last for several weeks to months and the older they are at the time of the procedure, the more painful and the longer the recovery it becomes. I hope this helps! Keep Zoey rested for another 10-14 days and ask the vet for pain medications / an anti-inflammatory to see if that helps at all. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further.
