My cat's dew claws torn in a fight. Will they grow back? What to do?

If the nail was torn, it is a good idea to try and trim it back if there are loose edges above the quick to prevent further snagging. If it was completely pulled out, it can grow back, however it is best to monitor for signs of infection as nailbeds can easily become infected. This can include pain, swelling of the paw, limping, chewing/licking at the paw, oozing of debris and discoloration. If you see any signs of pain or infection it is best to bring her to the vet ASAP for treatment.

Hi and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If the dew claw has been pulled off from the nail bed, the nail will eventually fall off and a new nail may grow back. Declaws often get caught easily and injuries to decllaws are common so it is recommended they be removed to prevent this from happening. If the claw is not healing well or frequently becomes infected, the declaw can be surgically removed.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Max! if you are referring the the "thumb" nail that is the dew claw. If they tear or break that nail, the treatment is to cut it back to the pink vein or quick. If the nail has already been torn off to the pink vein and there isn't any residual nail hanging off then bandaging it for 3-5 days should be enough. Sometimes we do prescribe oral antibiotics and pain medications. The nail will grow back, which is a slow process. If there is still nail hanging on then it should be cut back as that is a constant source of pain. I wish Max the best!

The dewclaws in the back may have been loosely attached which the operating veterinarian thought it would be best to have them removed. You would have to speak with the veterinarian to know for sure. The pain from declawing a kitten can last for several weeks to months and the older they are at the time of the procedure, the more painful and the longer the recovery it becomes. I hope this helps! The nail will eventually regrow with time. At this stage it is essential to remove/cut the nail (a picture of it would be essential to give you more specific advices about how to to do it) and keep the area underneath (nail bed) disinfected (you can use an hibiscrub solution).

It looks like your cat’s toenail has been sheared off, probably from an injury, fight or being hit by a car. My best recommendation is to take your car to the vet where they will be able to fully clean the area around the nail, trim the nails if necessary, and give your cat an antibiotic and pain medication if needed. Is it possible that Mickey got in a fight with something? I can't tell from the photo's if the nail is actually broken or not. They do have an outter cuticle that can shed but the nail is still fine and intact. Examine the 'quik' of the nail (that's the pinkish area at the base of the nail). If the break is through that area, if you see blood or redness around the base of the nail, have Mickey examined by the veterinarian. Clean off his paws as best he will let you. Check him all over for any bite wounds and have him examined if any area found. You may also just have him examined to be safe. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.
