My cat just got neutered. What to expect with anesthesia, cone, pain?

The Ecollar will need to stay on for a couple of days while the wound is initially healing, but as long as Dodger leaves the incision alone, you can take it off after four to seven days. It can take up to 10 days for the incision to fully heal, and if he is licking it excessively when the collar is removed, then it will have to stay on. He won't hurt himself in the collar, a lot of cats are annoyed by them, but it's important to make sure they aren't allowed to lick the incision. Licking in the incision will interrupt the healing process and will introduce infection into the area.

Usually neuter surgeries go without complications although like with any surgeries animals can have complications from being under anesthesia. It is recommended to avoid him getting to the incision to avoid delayed healing. You can do this by using an e-collar which you can obtain from your veterinarian or local pet store. Unfortunately, there is very little you can do in terms of pain management for a cat at home, as far over the counter medications. They are all dangerous and ineffective. A cat neuter is a typically very simple, quick, and free of complications. So, if he is experiencing this type of reaction now post-operatively, I would be concerned and get him back to whoever performed the procedure. If you take him to an emergency clinic now, they'll be able to do the same and get him medications that will help calm him down, and hopefully make him feel better. The one thing you can try to do if he'll allow it is, if the area where he was operated looks swollen, you can try icing it. Hope this makes sense.

Most cats do hate wearing the cone at home. It is tough to watch them act in this manner. However, in order to help prevent him from both injuring himself trying to get it off and also keeping him from getting to his incision, it may be best to keep him in a small room like the bathroom for tonight, then call your vet on tomorrow and ask for a sedative to give him at home while he still recovers from surgery. Hello. Most cats do very well after surgery, so as long as Haiku does not get too active tearing through the house, he can pretty much do his usual routine. There are no special requirements to aid in his healing other than to check the area for anything that looks unusual. He can clean the surgical area & will not harm anything. I would continue his pain medications at least for a day or so to make sure he has a normal recovery. If anything does concern you, contact your veterinarian immediately. Oh Chandler, what a naughty kitty. They are so good at removing their cone! It looks like there is a little prolapsed tissue there likely from where he opened the incision. As long as he keeps his cone on overnight it will likely be okay to see you vet tomorrow. They can then make sure he doesn't need a suture and/or antibiotics. His castration wound looks good, I see no evidence of infection and he is apparently not licking it either. He should indeed be back to his normal self after three days. You may want to take his temperature with a digital rectal thermometer to check whether he has a fever. should he have a fever ( 103+F) he will need to go back to the vet for a recheck. However the whole excitement from being at the vet's, the anesthesia, the drive in the car may just have caught up with him today. If he is not eating, drinking or does not want to play on Monday, I would also take him back for a recheck.
