Is cat neutering safe? What post-op care and side effects to expect?

Depends on the anesthetic used, it can take up to 72 hours for a pet to completely recover. Most pets will recover within 24 hours. The e-collar (cone) is necessary to prevent licking of the incision. Don't worry though, Chandler will acclimate. You may be able to remove it for short periods to allow him to eat or drink, but you must watch him carefully to prevent licking. The injection should cover the worst of the post operative discomfort. If not, you can request more from your veterinarian. Monitor for lethargy, decreased appetite, meowing excessively, drooling or panting. These may indicate discomfort.

A trained vet doctor performing a cat neuter is very safe. Cats are actually much safer than dogs to neuter. In order to make sure Vanilla doesn't feel the surgery, he will be given anesthesia. I would just make sure you fast him for the procedure. Pick up any food after 10pm on Friday night. Male cats do typically well and they usually do fine. Just monitor for licking the area and any swelling or discharge but again they typically do very well. If he does lick at the area after the procedure I would just call your veterinarian. In general, it is better to space it out just because both of these procedures (neuter surgery and vaccines) can result in complications or side effects, often times we do them close to each other or at the same time due to logistics and most cats do just fine. Give pain medication as prescribed by your veterinarian. It is important to make sure that you restrict his activity to short leash walks only (for the purpose of going to the bathroom) for the first week after surgery. Excessive activity such as running jumping or playing will increase the likelihood of complications. Lastly, but most importantly, he must wear an E collar (cone of shame) to prevent him from looking at or biting at the incision. Licking or biting the incision could lead to the incision coming apart and a need for further surgery. It could also lead to the incision becoming infected which could even make him systemically ill. Hello. Most cats do very well after surgery, so as long as Haiku does not get too active tearing through the house, he can pretty much do his usual routine. There are no special requirements to aid in his healing other than to check the area for anything that looks unusual. He can clean the surgical area & will not harm anything. I would continue his pain medications at least for a day or so to make sure he has a normal recovery. If anything does concern you, contact your veterinarian immediately. The Ecollar will need to stay on for a couple of days while the wound is initially healing, but as long as Dodger leaves the incision alone, you can take it off after four to seven days. It can take up to 10 days for the incision to fully heal, and if he is licking it excessively when the collar is removed, then it will have to stay on. He won't hurt himself in the collar, a lot of cats are annoyed by them, but it's important to make sure they aren't allowed to lick the incision. Licking in the incision will interrupt the healing process and will introduce infection into the area.
