Post-neuter care for my kitten: routine, licking, and pain meds?

You can ask your vet for pain medications for Powder, and give them as directed. I personally have not run across a cat that has associated hands with a traumatic event, and do not believe it is common at all. The cats I have neutered, including my own, don't remember the procedure. Keep him quiet, give him pain medications, and keep him warm. I hope this helps!

Hi there! It's really important that your kitten takes it easy for approximately a week after neutering. Keep his activity as low as possible. The incisions will heal very quickly, assuming we are talking about a male cat. When you take him home your vet will give you detailed instructions to help guide you !

Unfortunately, there is very little you can do in terms of pain management for a cat at home, as far over the counter medications. They are all dangerous and ineffective. A cat neuter is a typically very simple, quick, and free of complications. So, if he is experiencing this type of reaction now post-operatively, I would be concerned and get him back to whoever performed the procedure. If you take him to an emergency clinic now, they'll be able to do the same and get him medications that will help calm him down, and hopefully make him feel better. The one thing you can try to do if he'll allow it is, if the area where he was operated looks swollen, you can try icing it. Hope this makes sense.

Depends on the anesthetic used, it can take up to 72 hours for a pet to completely recover. Most pets will recover within 24 hours. The e-collar (cone) is necessary to prevent licking of the incision. Don't worry though, Chandler will acclimate. You may be able to remove it for short periods to allow him to eat or drink, but you must watch him carefully to prevent licking. The injection should cover the worst of the post operative discomfort. If not, you can request more from your veterinarian. Monitor for lethargy, decreased appetite, meowing excessively, drooling or panting. These may indicate discomfort.

Usually neuter surgeries go without complications although like with any surgeries animals can have complications from being under anesthesia. I would get a soft paper collar at PetCo that you can tighten so he can’t remove it. If it’s been a day or two then go back to his normal litter. I don’t want to break his litter box training, and he could develop a urinary problem if he’s not going regularly. If the incisions are closed then the litter won’t be an issue. Do not give Buster any pain medicines for humans, they are toxic to cats. Give him lots of TLC if he wants it. If he still appears in pain tomorrow morning, give your vet a call and ask whether you can have some pain medicine for him. Usually we give toms an injection of a pain killer that should last for 24 hrs and do not give pain medicine to take home. So Buster may have received pain medicine and is maybe still feeling uncomfortable from the anesthesia.
