How long should my kitten wear a cone after neutering, and is it safe?

Pet's info: Cat | Siamese | Male | neutered | 8 lbs

Having my kitten neutered and he will have to wear an E-cone I don't know how long to leave it on? Also, is it possible that he could hurt himself in the cone? If so how do I prevent it?

The Ecollar will need to stay on for a couple of days while the wound is initially healing, but as long as Dodger leaves the incision alone, you can take it off after four to seven days. It can take up to 10 days for the incision to fully heal, and if he is licking it excessively when the collar is removed, then it will have to stay on. He won't hurt himself in the collar, a lot of cats are annoyed by them, but it's important to make sure they aren't allowed to lick the incision. Licking in the incision will interrupt the healing process and will introduce infection into the area.

The cone or Ecollar should stay on until his sutures come out (if needed) or until the incision site heals which takes about 10-14 days. Rough housing or rough play with house mate should be avoided during the healing time. You may decide to separate Cal from the female cat if you think it is needed to help avoid rough playing between the two of them but it may not be entirely necessary.

If your kittens are female, keep the cone on them for about 10 days, or until the incision is healed. If your kittens are boys, you can try to take the cone off after about 5 - 7 days. The must not lick the wound.

From what I can see in your picture I think everything looks good, but it can sometimes be difficult to evaluate from a picture alone. I typically recommend waiting at least 10 days until removing the e-collar but some vets might recommend more or less time. I think it would be best to follow your vet's instructions. If they didn't specify you should wait to remove the e-collar until you can contact them.

My cat just got neutered. What to expect with anesthesia, cone, pain?

Depends on the anesthetic used, it can take up to 72 hours for a pet to completely recover. Most pets will recover within 24 hours. The e-collar (cone) is necessary to prevent licking of the incision. Don't worry though, Chandler will acclimate. You may be able to remove it for short periods to allow him to eat or drink, but you must watch him carefully to prevent licking. The injection should cover the worst of the post operative discomfort. If not, you can request more from your veterinarian. Monitor for lethargy, decreased appetite, meowing excessively, drooling or panting. These may indicate discomfort.

Kitten just neutered: cone off, licking stitches, eating litter?

I would get a soft paper collar at PetCo that you can tighten so he can’t remove it. If it’s been a day or two then go back to his normal litter. I don’t want to break his litter box training, and he could develop a urinary problem if he’s not going regularly. If the incisions are closed then the litter won’t be an issue. Hi there! I would recommend asking the vet who did his surgery how long you should leave the cone on. For my neuter patients, if absorbable sutures have been used for skin closure, I normally tell clients they can remove the cone after 10-14 days since the incision should be healed by then. Usually neuter surgeries go without complications although like with any surgeries animals can have complications from being under anesthesia. It is recommended to avoid him getting to the incision to avoid delayed healing. You can do this by using an e-collar which you can obtain from your veterinarian or local pet store. Sometimes non-steroidal anti-inaflammarory drugs are used for a few days after surgery. Good luck!
