My cat had a UTI, now has a mouth problem, isn't grooming, and smells. Why?

Cats can have chronic urinary tract infections, stones, bladder cancer, or any number of issues causing them to urinate outside the box even after treatment. Sometimes this is very frustrating to treat. I am concerned that she is pawing at her mouth, as this usually indicates severe dental disease or oral infection (stomatitis), both of which being very painful conditions. If she has not had a full oral examination, she needs this to address whatever is going on in the mouth. She probably needs to have her urine cultured as well if she seems to have an infection that is unresponsive to antibiotics.

Poor girl. It looks like Memow has an infection going on there possibly. I would get this checked by your vet. The hair needs to be shaved away and the skin looked at closely. If there is an infection, as suspected, then Me-mow will need a short course of antibiotics to hopefully clear this up. The vet will also likely want to check her for a UTI, since this is a common cause for infections near the genital area. If she is not grooming well, then this could also indicate an internal organ issue, so bloodwork may be recommended to check her full health status and make sure we don't miss anything underlying. She probably has cystitis and not a UTI. It is not impossible that she has a UTI concurrently but I think cystitis is more likely. Antibiotics will not help that. She needs to be on pain meds and you need to de-stress the environment. It sounds like she could be in pain, it could also be related to a kidney disease. you need to take her back to your vet in order to get it checked and treated, she will likely need a blood test as well.

It may be related to the recent stress of the infection or medications that were given. I would just keep an eye on it. If it continues for 24-48 hours or if Chibi develops additional symptoms, such as poor appetite or lethargy, I would definitely have him re-examined by the vet.

This sounds very much like she may have a tooth problem or a mouth ulcer or an injury. Since she apparently is in pain when you try to touch her around the mouth, I suggest you take her to your veterinarian for a dental exam. She may need a tooth removed or be treated for an ulcer or have tartar removed.
