My 5-month-old cat has a loose fang. Is it a baby tooth? Can I remove it?

I would definitely recommend leaving it alone because you could cause some pain and injury by wiggling on it. However I would consider having your vet take a look at it because safe extraction if the canine tooth may be recommended to avoid having a huge hole left behind for foodstuffs to then get clogged into. If your vet extracts the tooth instead of just letting it fall out, the vet can then close the hole with suture. This is the best approach when dealing with diseases canine teeth especially, because this is the only tooth that can leave a hole that directly communicates with the nasal passages (oronasal fistula), so we take extra precautions with this tooth in particular. It may be ok to remove if it is fairy lose and comes out without too much manipulation. Use your fingers only when trying to pry it free. Also use care not to get bitten as this may cause some discomfort from your pet kitty. If you can't get it free,then visit your local vet for assistance. If this is a kitten tooth, then it can be removed fairly easily; however if this is an adult tooth then periodontal disease may be lurking underneath the gum requiring a full dental cleaning and extraction(s). Hi and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Cleo is losing her kitten teeth and getting her adult teeth in. The canine (fang) teeth come in around 4-6 months of age. Sounds like this is completely normal and has nothing do to with the food that you are feeding her. Over the next 2 months you will notice the canine teeth (kitten) will fall out and the adult teeth will replace them. Sounds like Cleo is doing good otherwise. I wish you two the best.

Good observation. These are retained baby teeth. They should be out by now, but it looks like the permanent tooth did not push it out. These teeth do tend to cause problems, because it's easy for debris to get trapped in-between the two teeth and cause infection. For this reason, we usually recommend removal of the tooth. Poor kitty. If the tooth is loose enough to then a gentle pull may be fine to do, as long as it is well tolerated by Oreo. However the deciduous teeth should fall out on their own as the adult teeth come in and we generally let this process occur naturally with no need of pulling on the teeth manually. Your kitty should then have all adult teeth by 6 months of age. I hope this helps!

Canine (fang) teeth usually erupt between 5-6 months of age. Since Daisy is not quite 5 months old yet, the chance of her having a fully erupted adult canine tooth is quite slim. The tooth in the picture looks much more like a baby tooth than an impressively large adult canine tooth in a dog her size. With that said, I'd still recommend having your vet perform a full oral exam on Daisy during her next visit. They may also recommend taking dental x-rays to be sure that the full tooth root came out, as retained roots can be problematic. Odds are good that her tooth was already just a little bit loose and this rough playing just sped up the process. It's always better to be safe than sorry!

Typically the baby premolars will fall out between 16-20 weeks of age, so it could be possible that Chid has pulled out his adult teeth, but from the picture, these do not look like adult teeth. I suspect that his premolars are later coming out, and that's what he pulled out. I would have him seen by a vet just to be safe, and show the vet the teeth. I hope this helps!
