My cat has a loose, protruding fang. What should I do right now?

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed | 10 years and 10 months old | 11 lbs

My 9 yr old black cat has a protruding lower right Fang. No blood or drooling, eating fine. The fang looks loose. Should I just leave it alone?

I would definitely recommend leaving it alone because you could cause some pain and injury by wiggling on it. However I would consider having your vet take a look at it because safe extraction if the canine tooth may be recommended to avoid having a huge hole left behind for foodstuffs to then get clogged into. If your vet extracts the tooth instead of just letting it fall out, the vet can then close the hole with suture. This is the best approach when dealing with diseases canine teeth especially, because this is the only tooth that can leave a hole that directly communicates with the nasal passages (oronasal fistula), so we take extra precautions with this tooth in particular. Schedule an appt with your local vet soon and I hope everything turns out well for your cat Zoe.

The best thing would be to have your vet take a look at her mouth to assess the situation. If she has a loose tooth than she probably has some periodontal disease and needs to have her teeth cleaned. Your vet can also extract any bad teeth. She may also need an antibiotic to treat or prevent infection.

Regarding being worried about him swallowing the tooth should it fall out on its own--the answer there is that you do not need to worry about it. If he were to swallow a tooth, it would be digested enough by the acid in the stomach to pass without a problem.

It may be ok to remove if it is fairy lose and comes out without too much manipulation. Use your fingers only when trying to pry it free. Also use care not to get bitten as this may cause some discomfort from your pet kitty. If you can't get it free,then visit your local vet for assistance. If this is a kitten tooth, then it can be removed fairly easily; however if this is an adult tooth then periodontal disease may be lurking underneath the gum requiring a full dental cleaning and extraction(s). It sounds like Rider likely has severe dental disease, as it is not normal for teeth to just fall out like that. Dental disease may not be visible on the outside, but can cause teeth to fall out as described. A dental cleaning and oral exam performed by your veterinarian while Rider is under anesthesia can help treat any disease present, and will allow your vet to check and see if the tooth that fell out left any pieces behind. Dental disease can be extremely painful, but cats will often continue to eat and drink despite the pain. If left untreated the infection from dental disease may get much worse and spread to elsewhere in the body, causing further pain, so it's important that you have Rider seen by a vet.

My cat's tooth is falling out. Is it normal or a serious issue?

I see you have a snaggletooth kitty! If you mean the little incisor on the right, do nothing, it will fall out by itself. She has already lost a canine tooth, which, in itself is not a problem, however I would have the veterinarian look at her teeth soon. She may have excessive tartar, gingivitis and /or FORL (lesions on the tooth roots) which make the teeth fall out and are painful. Tank may need a teeth cleaning under anesthesia to make sure her mouth is healthy again and not lose more teeth. Gingivitis and tartar can also lead to detrimental bacteria entering the blood stream and causing heart and kidney disease. So dental cleaning is important when there are indications of dental disease.

Cat has a hanging tooth but eats and drinks. Is it an emergency?

If Licorice is still eating and drinking, it is not an emergency to have the tooth extracted. However, the area from where it is dangling may be more likely to cause pain and it may be opening up a pipeline for infection into the underlying gumline. You may want to have the area assessed by your vet and potentially have the tooth pulled. If it is truly dangling by a thread, your vet may just pull it without anesthesia. Hope this makes sense.
