My cat is lethargic, has a fever, and meows from ear pain. Why?

Just like humans, pets can get sick for many many reasons. It's possible he's fighting a virus, that he ate something he shouldn't have or that his stomach hurts. If he is lethargic beyond 48 hours, if he is not eating or drinking as normal or if he is getting worse, have him examined by the veterinarian.

Allergies do not typically cause fever, lethargy, and decreased appetite in cats so he should be examined by a vet to determine the cause. Your vet can do a physical examination, blood work, and x-rays, if needed, to help diagnose and then determine the best way to treat the problem. He could have an infection that needs to be treated.

I'm sorry Louie is sick! The drooling could be due to nausea or pain, and when cats are sick, they typically become lethargic. Unfortunately his symptoms are quite general and could be caused by a number of different things such as a systemic illness, infection, inflammation, or an injury. The only way to know for sure what is causing them is to have him seen by a vet, and I'd recommend taking him in first thing in the morning so he can be examined, diagnosed, and treated. Yes i would take her in to a clinic. Mobile vets are limited in what they can do diagnostically and treatment wise for sick pets. These sound like concerning symptoms. They can assess for a fever, dehydration, and pain. Likely bloodwork, felv/fiv testing, and xrays will be recommended as the first steps. I am sorry to hear that Meaw isn’t feeling well. A normal temperature for a cat is around 100-102 F. A fever could absolutely make her lethargic. If this has been going on for more than one day then I would encourage you to have her evaluated by your veterinarian as soon as possible. This temperature is slightly below normal. Normal temp is 37.7 to 38.8. We can sometimes see the body temp be a bit below normal when their blood circulation is less not as good as it should be — most often we see this this due to heart disease or dehydration. If he is very dumpy and lethargic (which is what I assume you mean by “lifeless”) and recently vomited as well, please take him to your vet. They may recommend blood tests and possibly xrays. Treatment will depend on what they find on exam and any testing.

Poor Jasper! In addition to antibiotics, I would start Jasper on an NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory) to help with the fever, if they have not already done so, since his kidney values are normal. It does happen occasionally that we see a cat that is obviously experiencing symptoms of a severe infection or inflammatory response, but we are unable to locate the source of the infection. If abdominal radiographs and ultrasound were not done, this is something additional that could potentially help discover the source of the infection. At this point, make sure he is eating, get the antibiotics into him, ask for pain medication like an nsaid (metacam, onsiar, etc.) or an opiate (buprenorphine) if they didn't send you with one, and give him time.
