My cat had kittens. How to care for them and when to spay/neuter?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding your cats. I would start by taking the two 9 month old kittens to the vet. They can be started on vaccines, set up appointments for surgery to have them spayed/neutered and discussed deworming as well as flea and tick prevention. You can ask when to have the kittens seen. Deworming usually starts around two weeks of age. After they are weaned, the mama cat can be spayed. Then the kittens can be vaccinated starting at 6-8 weeks of age. I hope this information helps!

Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! I recommend spaying and neutering cats around 5-6 months of age. Declawing is amputation the of the last segment of their digit, like a knuckle in people. It is done with a blade or a laser which depends on the hospital. Most hospitals are getting away from declawing and are not offering it anymore. It is painful and behavioral issues (like inappropriate elimination) and chronic pain or even regrowth of the nail if not done appropriately has been seen. If you are going to declaw then it should be done with the spay and neuter when they are young. Make sure there is no stress, leave mama alone. Do not constantly handle the kittens. Feed Bambi good quality kitten food, wet and dry. Leave the kittens with mama until they are at least 12 weeks old. Take them to a veterinarian for vaccinations at the age of 8 weeks (and continue for the next rounds of vaccinations as your vet prescribes), start worming them at 6 weeks and worm them every 2 weeks until they are 12 weeks old. Apart from that, cat mamas are great mothers who will teach their kittens everything they need to know, what food to eat, how to use a cat litter box, how to hunt, how to play fight (important for kittens to grow up with their siblings until they are 12 weeks plus old.) Congratulations! What a beautiful kitten! Most vets start a vaccine series between 6-8 weeks of age, and will also deworm or check stool samples at the first visit. Following that, they typically need a visit/booster every 3-5 weeks until they are a few months old. The exact vaccines schedule will be individualized by your vet. They may also recommend parasite prevention or routine dewormers. Other things you can do at home include feeding a high quality kitten food, checking their urine and stool output and getting them used to being handled. Becoming well socialized is very important! Make sure they have plenty of vertical space like a cat tree, handle him gently and frequently - get him used to having his nail trims, etc. Don't let him bite you:) It looks like you are off to a great start!

The good news is that most mother cats are very good mothers, and we generally don't have to do much to help them. If Naomi still is full of milk, there is potentially more risk of bleeding and/or infection. We generally recommend that kittens be kept away from mom and not allowed to nurse for at least 2 weeks before the mom is spayed.
