When should a mother cat and her newborn kittens first see a vet?

Kittens should be dewormed with a liquid deworming solution licensed for treatment of kittens from 2 weeks of age; it is important to weigh each kitten and measure the dosage accurately. Intestinal worms can cause failure to thrive, damage to bowel wall and intestinal obstructions if not treated. IT is recommended to treat the mother with a treatment licensed for use in lactating queens 24hours after the kittens as she will likely ingest the worms passed by the kittens

Many times you will not see intestinal parasites until the animals are critically sick. It's recommended to deworm young puppies and kittens every two weeks for at least three cycles, due to the lifecycle of the parasites. I would recommend getting a product labeled for kittens such as pyrantel pamoate. Make sure you weigh them and get accurate weights to dose the medication. As soon as you are able I do still recommend a veterinary exam as they will need vaccines, feline leukemia testing and there are other parasites that the pyrantel may not address. Look in your area as there are often low cost vaccination clinics available through pet stores or feed stores if a full service clinic is not possible. Also check with your local veterinarian as many times they may offer a rate for a litter of kittens versus charging each animal individually. Congratulations! What a beautiful kitten! Most vets start a vaccine series between 6-8 weeks of age, and will also deworm or check stool samples at the first visit. Following that, they typically need a visit/booster every 3-5 weeks until they are a few months old. The exact vaccines schedule will be individualized by your vet. They may also recommend parasite prevention or routine dewormers. Other things you can do at home include feeding a high quality kitten food, checking their urine and stool output and getting them used to being handled. Becoming well socialized is very important! Make sure they have plenty of vertical space like a cat tree, handle him gently and frequently - get him used to having his nail trims, etc. Don't let him bite you:) It looks like you are off to a great start!

Hi there and thank you for using Pet Coach! I would recommend deworming the kittens and starting their first vaccinations (FeLV and FVRCP vaccinations). These vaccinations will need to be repeated two more times after the initial vaccine. These vaccinations will help develop immunity against Feline Leukemia, Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus and Panleukopenia. Great questions! You can start brushing Bambi's teeth now. I would get a cat toothbrush and cat toothpaste (do NOT use human toothpaste) from the pet store. I recommend the CET brand of dental products. You can deworm her at home, you can pick up a deworming treatment while at the pet store. When she is six weeks of age, she will be old enough for her first vaccines, so make her an appointment with a vet to get those done. I hope this helps!

You can feed them canned kitten food mixed with an appropriate kitten milk replacer, such as KMR. Mix them to make a gruel or slurry. Have them examined by your veterinarian to diagnose and treat any pre-existing conditions and to deworm them. The deworming should be repeated every weeks for 3 treatments. Once they are about 8 weeks old, you can discuss vaccines or begin to rehome them.

Kittens should have their first set of vaccines between 6-8 weeks of age, so I would schedule an appointment as soon as possible. They can be dewormed as young as two weeks of age, so I would definitely go ahead and do this as well.
