Is excessive thirst a side effect of Keppra medication for my cat?

The cephalexin generally does not cause an increased thirst but the Terbinafine I have seen this as a side effect. It will not cause any harm with the increased thirst and should resolve once the course of treatment is completed. Luckily Keppra has a large safety index, meaning that 20x the therapeutic level (1,200mg/kg) can be given and only cause mild symptoms (salivation and vomiting). Your pet should be ok after receiving 1500 mg at once b/c this is a dosage of 36mg/kg). No need to induce vomiting or visit your ER vet. You can return to his normal 2 pills at his next schedule dosage. I would also recommend just informing your vet for proper record keeping. The most common side effects of doxycycline HYC include vomiting, diarrhea, and a loss of appetite. More serious side effects include liver failure characterized by a yellowing of the skin, as well as seizures, bleeding, behavior changes, trouble swallowing, or an upset stomach when doxycycline has not been just given. Increased thirst is not a side effect of this medication, but some dogs with Lyme disease may develop kidney disease. One of the signs of kidney disease is increased thirst. I would not stop the medication, and I would give his vet a call immediately. It may be best you bring him into the vet immediately. Best of luck.

Hi there! Sounds like you are an excellent owner! Tony is lucky! Yes, he can still be thirsty. The medications may be causing this and not necessarily the hyperthyroidism. If all the lab values are normal then I would not be too worried about it. I hope this helps. Best wishes to you and Tony!

I'm not sure why this is happening, this is not a side effect usually seen with one of these medications so this could be due to a urinary condition. i would recommend to take him to the vet to get it checked, if it is a urinary infection the convenia should take care of it though.

I'm so sorry to hear that Sadie is not doing well. Cats very rarely develop the side effects of increases in thirst and urination that dogs and people do while they are taking Prednisone, so I would be suspicious of another problem going on. I would recommend having your veterinarian check urine and blood samples on Sadie to evaluate for another problem before considering stopping Prednisone. Hello, this medication is actually very safe when used topically and does not have many reported side effects in pets. It may cause allergic reactions, but these area also rare and more common when used in combination with other medications. The signs you are describing however may be more consistent with dehydration or kidney disease. I would recommend continuing his ear medications, however, he may need some bloodwork to check his kidney values and hydration status.
