Is my dog's extreme thirst from cephalexin or terbinafine medicine?

The most common side effects of doxycycline HYC include vomiting, diarrhea, and a loss of appetite. More serious side effects include liver failure characterized by a yellowing of the skin, as well as seizures, bleeding, behavior changes, trouble swallowing, or an upset stomach when doxycycline has not been just given. Increased thirst is not a side effect of this medication, but some dogs with Lyme disease may develop kidney disease. One of the signs of kidney disease is increased thirst. I would not stop the medication, and I would give his vet a call immediately. It may be best you bring him into the vet immediately. Best of luck.

Hello. Cephalexin is an antibiotic, so your veterinarian wanted to cover for any secondary bacterial infections. The side effects reported are vomiting, diarrhea, excitement, depression, anorexia, & salivation. This is a very common & safe antibiotic used in dogs. Terbinafine is the antifungal agent, and the side effects reported in dogs seem to only involve the eyes, including some swelling & conjunctivitis. In humans, the majority of adverse effects involve the GI tract & the skin. No reports of seizures are reported with the use of either drug. So if you have observed a seizure in Bruno, please contact your veterinarian as soon as possible. Thank you.

Also, they can be used together. However, terbinafine should not be used in dogs with pre-existing kidney disease. Please, discuss with your vet if the treatment should be discontinued or not. It is a worry that the creatinine is going up and your vet may want to change or stop treatment for Bruno, just in case he has individual sensitivity to any of these medications.

Hello, thank you for using PetCoach. I'm sorry that Haus is having this issue. I would not be concerned about the water consumption increase. I have not heard of anyone saying that has happened with a dog on doxycycline but every animal is an individual and can affect them differently. Either way, the extra water will not harm him. If the diarrhea persists for more than 36 hours then I think a vet visit would be warranted as that can be a side effect of the medication. I worry that the secondary ingredients in the Osteo Bi-flex may cause some issues, however without knowing which of the Bi-flex products you're using, it would be hard to determine this. Most dogs do just fine on Cosequin only (at the right dose for their size) and there are multiple products on the market if you feel Kopy needs more than just glucosamine. I would follow your vet's recommendation for what products to use as they know your dog and any other health issues/medications she's on best. As for the increased thirst, it would be hard to say if it is related to this medication, or another underlying issue, especially since Kopy is a senior pup. A blood panel to rule out any issues, as well as additional tests as needed (thyroid, cushings, etc) is always a good idea with new or changing symptoms.

Yes, it is possible that the Keppra could be leading to increased thirst. I'm so happy it is helping him! Follow up with your vet if you have any concerns, otherwise follow the directions they gave you for treatment and hopefully it continues to work well for him.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Prednisone is a steroid. Steroids cause pets to eat more, drink more, urinate more, and pant. The increased stool could be if he is eating more but antibiotics, like cephalexin, can cause loose stools. I suspect the signs you are seeing is because of the medications. If you notice any vomiting or diarrhea please let the veterinarian that prescribed the medications know. Kisses to Cooper!
