Dog on Doxy for Lyme: excessive thirst. Should I stop his medication?

Pet's info: Dog | Bull Terrier | Male | unneutered | 3 years and 11 months old | 70 lbs

Hi my dog has Lyme and was prescribed doxycycline HYC 100mg 1 1/2 two times per day (only 3 Days) he is drinking a lot so much so that he peed in his crate overnight which he never did , i took the bowl away so he tries to get into the bathroom, he is acting normal otherwise, I am thinking of stopping this drug, please help thank you

The most common side effects of doxycycline HYC include vomiting, diarrhea, and a loss of appetite. More serious side effects include liver failure characterized by a yellowing of the skin, as well as seizures, bleeding, behavior changes, trouble swallowing, or an upset stomach when doxycycline has not been just given. Increased thirst is not a side effect of this medication, but some dogs with Lyme disease may develop kidney disease. One of the signs of kidney disease is increased thirst. I would not stop the medication, and I would give his vet a call immediately. It may be best you bring him into the vet immediately. Best of luck.

I have not heard of anyone saying that has happened with a dog on doxycycline but every animal is an individual and can affect them differently. Either way, the extra water will not harm him. If the diarrhea persists for more than 36 hours then I think a vet visit would be warranted as that can be a side effect of the medication. Is my dog's extreme thirst from cephalexin or terbinafine medicine?

The cephalexin generally does not cause an increased thirst but the Terbinafine I have seen this as a side effect. It will not cause any harm with the increased thirst and should resolve once the course of treatment is completed. Is extended doxycycline treatment safe for my dog with Lyme?

If Rufus is still testing positive for Lyme disease, then yes he should continue to take the doxycycline. If you stop it and he's still positive for it, then the symptoms of it will come back. He needs to be treated until he is cleared of the disease. Studies have shown that some animals do not clear the organism after 30 days, and will relapse once the antibiotic is discontinued. While there can be side effects of antibiotics, the symptoms of Lyme disease can be quite severe and lead to fatal kidney failure. Not treating him will lead to much worse symptoms that the side effects of long term antibiotic use.

Is my dog's 300mg doxycycline dosage for Lyme disease too high?

The recommended dose of doxycycline for Lyme disease is 20mg/lb once daily, so Joey should be taking around 200mg a day. Rarely doxycycline is used at higher doses or more frequently than once every 24hrs. Please, get in touch with your local vet to discuss the treatment as it sounds that the dose should be slightly adjusted.

My dog threw up after extra doxycycline dose. Is this normal?

The extra dose probably caused the vomiting. Doxycycline does cause vomiting as a side effect. If the vomiting resolves, then I would not be concerned. If the vomiting persists, contact your veterinarian.

Drinking and urinating more is a common side effect of prednisone. I recommend talking to your vet; they may adjust Arizona’s dose of prednisone if the urinating is really excessive. And they may want to check a urine sample just to make sure there isn’t a UTI; doxycycline is an antibiotic but urinary infections are still possible. Hope this helps!

My dog takes doxycycline & tramadol for Lyme. Why can't he stand?

Thank you for contacting Pet Coach with your question about Zeus. I'm sorry he has Lyme disease. Potential side effects in doxycycline include nausea, vomiting, decrease in appetite, and diarrhea. Tramadol has some of the same side effects, but neither cause struggles with standing. I suspect this is related to his Lyme disease, which causes general weakness.
