Why is my cat's meow suddenly different and hoarse after a new kitten?

I wouldn't be concerned if this is how he has always sounded. Upper respiratory infections are very common in young kittens and sometimes swelling can affect the vocal folds - it's possible that he had some scar tissue formed. It's also possible that this is how he was born. If he does have trouble swallowing or breathing, or if he regurgitates or vomits you should see your vet.

A change in the voice generally indicates an illness. I recommend to have your kitten seen by the veterinarian who may prescribe medications to ease inflammation and any discomfort in the throat. I hope Peabo starts feeling better quickly and please feel free to post any additional questions.

I'd keep an eye on Charlie for now. If his meow stays different over the next 48 hours or he develops other signs like lethargy, sneezing, coughing, nasal discharge, or a loss of appetite, then I'd have him seen by a vet.

Voice change can be caused by many things. Cats do not get colds like people do. Most cats are exposed to several upper respiratory viruses over their lifetime that can flare up occasionally causing sneezing, runny eyes or nose, and occasionally voice change. A change can also occur with anything going on with the larynx (voice box) including trauma, masses (benign or malignant), nerve or muscle disorders, etc. Additionally some cats who have asthma or heartworm disease may manifest this with a voice change. So, if your kitty is exhibiting any other symptoms and/or is not feeling well the best plan would be to have your family vet examine her. Maude is so cute! It's hard to say what is going on with her as these signs could be nothing to worry about or they could be early signs of an illness. Sometimes the pitch of the meow will change with inflammation, a growth or infection in or near the vocal cords. Excessive meowing can also be a sign of pain or anxiety. I've also seen cats who were strictly indoor and then went outdoors and decided they liked it out there and didn't want to spend time inside any more. I would closely monitor her activity and appetite and watch for other signs such as vomiting, diarrhea or lethargy. If her behavioral changes coincide with these other signs of illness, I would definitely recommend taking her to your veterinarian for evaluation.

I believe that you may be asking about abnormal vocalization (feel free to post another question if I am mistaken). Essentially, this means that a cat's meow is different than normal either in the pitch/tone (i.e. more of a yowl or howl rather than a quieter meow) or more frequent meowing. Abnormal vocalization can occur due to a number of underlying conditions, including a response to pain, stress, urethral obstruction, hyperthyroidism, among many other issues. If you are concerned that Pudge's vocalization may be abnormal, I do recommend taking him to his vet to assure that there isn't a bigger issue at hand. I hope this helps and that all goes well!
