My senior cat's meow is suddenly soft like a kitten. Is this normal?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 12 lbs

Today, my 10-year-old cat's meow changed drastically. He has been in remission from diabetes for a couple years but since having to have timed feedings, he's been very vocal. But today, his meows became quite soft, almost like a kitten. His purr remains the same strength and volume. I returned from abroad this morning. While I was away, my roommate was taking care of him and she said he was fine. What should I do?

I'd keep an eye on Charlie for now. If his meow stays different over the next 48 hours or he develops other signs like lethargy, sneezing, coughing, nasal discharge, or a loss of appetite, then I'd have him seen by a vet.
