Why is my cat's meow different and she's coughing but acting normal?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Mediumhair | Female | spayed | 9 lbs

Hello! I have a 5 year old female cat. We were out of town and when we came back her meow sounded different, lower. She is coughing like maybe a hairball but nothing has come out. No other symptoms really. She’s eating, playful. Just curious why the strange meow?

Sometimes the voice can change due to an impending upper respiratory infection. Here is a great articles about URIs:

Voice changes can also occur with thyroid disease, other types of infections and cancer. If it continues or if you see signs of illness, have Cider examined. Best of luck.

A voice change can sometimes be a sign of an upper respiratory infection but without other symptoms I wouldn't be too concerned, If your cat starts sneezing, or if you notice red eyes or discharge from the eyes or nose then there might be more concern.
