Why is my cat's meow different and she's coughing but acting normal?

Voice change can be caused by many things. Cats do not get colds like people do. Most cats are exposed to several upper respiratory viruses over their lifetime that can flare up occasionally causing sneezing, runny eyes or nose, and occasionally voice change. A change can also occur with anything going on with the larynx (voice box) including trauma, masses (benign or malignant), nerve or muscle disorders, etc. Additionally some cats who have asthma or heartworm disease may manifest this with a voice change. So, if your kitty is exhibiting any other symptoms and/or is not feeling well the best plan would be to have your family vet examine her. There is not anything specific to do and it should go back to normal with time. An upper respiratory infection or a growth in the throat can also cause a voice change, so if Pickles has nasal or eye discharge, or if she is also swallowing frequently or breathing abnormally I'd recommend having her examined by your vet.

It could be laryngitis from an upper respiratory infection. Usually, the symptoms will go away within 10 days or so. It could just be her attitude, or she could be sick. Upper respiratory infections, nerve issues, polyps or masses in the throat, and hyperthyroidism could cause lethargy and a change in "voice." If you are concerned about Melo being seing, then I would recommend that you have her examined by a vet. They can do a thorough exam and discuss diagnostics or treatment if there is concern.

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to hear about Ollie. Upper respiratory infections (URI) in cats is extremely common. Kittens get infected from their mothers who start shedding the viruses thus infecting the kittens. Many cats live their whole lives carrying these viruses. They will occasionally develop signs of upper respiratory infections during times of stress at any point in time. We vaccinate for a few of these upper respiratory viruses but we still see many many cases. The vaccines should provide some protection and usually adult cats develop very mild signs. Signs of URIs- loss of voice or harsh sounding meows, sneezing, runny eyes/nose, fever/lethargy, decreased appetite, etc. Treating these infections can range from very simple to very complex cases that take weeks to months to improve. Possible treatment involves monitoring only or more in-depth treatment with antibiotics, antiviral medicines, a good deworming program and vaccination program, eye drops/eye ointments, nose drops, a nutritional supplement called L-lysine added to the food may help, and probiotics are all things to try. If Ollie continues to act normal (eats, drinks, goes to the bathroom and doesn't develop more signs or a worsening of the signs present), you can just monitor him. If your cat is otherwise happy, healthy, and eating, drinking, and acting normally, I would not be too concerned. The changes in your cat's purring could be a result of an upper respiratory infection, asthma, masses on the vocal cords, etc. Your vet should examine him to determine if there are signs of infection, and may need to take chest x-rays to evaluate the lungs for signs of asthma or masses. You first need to determine the cause of these changes before determining what will help manage them.
