Why is my cat's meow deeper and she's meowing a lot lately?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding your cat. I would recommend a trip to the veterinarian to ensure she is not suffering a medical problem causing this behavior change. A disease known as hyperthyroidism can cause increased vocalizations in a cat. It is usually accompanied an increase in thirst and urination, hyperactivity, possibly vomiting/ diarrhea and weight loss. She will likely have blood work performed to rule out this as well as other internal diseases. If she is found to be healthy, then you can discuss behavioral modifications at home. I believe that you may be asking about abnormal vocalization (feel free to post another question if I am mistaken). Essentially, this means that a cat's meow is different than normal either in the pitch/tone (i.e. more of a yowl or howl rather than a quieter meow) or more frequent meowing. Abnormal vocalization can occur due to a number of underlying conditions, including a response to pain, stress, urethral obstruction, hyperthyroidism, among many other issues. Voice change can be caused by many things. Cats do not get colds like people do. Most cats are exposed to several upper respiratory viruses over their lifetime that can flare up occasionally causing sneezing, runny eyes or nose, and occasionally voice change. A change can also occur with anything going on with the larynx (voice box) including trauma, masses (benign or malignant), nerve or muscle disorders, etc. Additionally some cats who have asthma or heartworm disease may manifest this with a voice change. So, if your kitty is exhibiting any other symptoms and/or is not feeling well the best plan would be to have your family vet examine her. Sometimes the time of a cat's meow will change based on their mood or emotion. As long as all else Is normal with him ( he's eating, drinking and normally active) I wouldn't worry. Could just be behavioral.

Some cats are simply quieter than others. I have a cat that very rarely meows, but that doesn't mean she can't do it. It could be that Sophie isn't highly vocal. It could be that she is lonely now that the other cats are no longer living with you, and that's why she's started yowling. You don't say how old your cat is, but if she is middle-aged or older the first thing I would be concerned about is possible thyroid disease - hyperthyroidism very commonly causes both of these symptoms. It also often causes increased appetite, and sometimes soft stool. Other possible causes could be diabetes, kidney disease, or even a digestive problem like inflammatory bowel disease. I would recommend having Ittybitty examined by a vet - he/she can do a simple blood panel to check for most of these problems, and advise you on treatment options based on the results.

Depending on when her last heat cycle was, she could be experiencing a false pregnancy.
