My cat took gentamicin. Why is she drinking and peeing more often?

Hello. Prescribing an antibiotic is a delicate balance between knowing what a pet has & how they will tolerate it. Gentamicin is a powerful antibiotic, but must be used with caution in dehydrated animals, & it is quite easy for a sick cat to become dehydrated. If your cat is in-hospital, then this is being monitored. If not, this is not my first choice of antibiotics to fight infection in a cat, BUT I also have no idea what your cat may have. If you are concerned, you should definitely discuss this with your vet, or perhaps seek a second opinion from some one else who can actually examine Guddu. I'm not sure why this is happening, this is not a side effect usually seen with one of these medications so this could be due to a urinary condition. i would recommend to take him to the vet to get it checked, if it is a urinary infection the convenia should take care of it though.

Unless the eye infection is caused by something else in the body, systemic antibiotics are rarely used or indicated. Ophthalmic antibiotics are much more likely to cure an infection of the eye in a timely manner. Sometimes what looks like an infection isn't actually caused by bacteria. It could also be caused by corneal abrasion or ulceration, allergies, foreign body, autoimmune disorder, etc. I also prefer other types of injectable antibiotics over gentamicin. It is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that can be kidney toxic and has a pretty long list of adverse effects. I only use it in cases that do not respond to safer antibiotics.

Hello. I am wondering if your cat has been given any medications or received any type of anti inflammatory injection on the day if the sedation and X-ray? If so, was it a “steroid” type of drug. These types of drugs commonly cause a period of increased thirst, increased urination. Other than medication-related, there wound not be any direct correlation. Thank you

It is concerning that he is drinking and urinating excessively. Since he is so young, I am concerned he has a congential kidney disorder causing kidney failure. He should have an ultrasound of his kidneys to look for abnormalities. Call your vet and give him/her an update to let your vet know he is drinking and urinating excessively.

Unfortunately you will not be able to just order an antibiotic online. This may not be a urinary tract infection and could be what we call a sterile cystitis. You could start by ensuring she is drinking plenty of water (recirculating water fountains help), switch to canned food and start a supplement called paxon or cranberry supplement treats for cats, which can be found online. If the symptoms are no better, the next step would be to have her seen by a veterinarian for testing and further treatment. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. You can mix the unflavored PediaLyte in equal amounts in his water bowl or mix it into his food. Make sure he isn't urinating anywhere outside his litterbox. Monitor for lethargy, loss of appetite or vomiting. Keep an eye out for straining to urinate and frequent visits to the litterbox. If the bear infections do not resolve, consider. Culture and sensitivity panel to identify the responsible organism as well as the best antibiotic to use in treatment.
