Why is my cat drinking and peeing so much after kidney issues?

I recommend to play it safe and have some lab work run. Given their age, it's better to play it safe. Catching kidney disease early means you can start treatment (which is usually just a diet change) and this can increase the length of quality life after diagnosis. I hope this helps.

If your cat is drinking excessive amounts of water then this can be a sign of kidney disease. We can often see early kidney disease with hyperthyroidism as well. I would recommend having some bloodwork done on your kitty if he hasn't had any in the last few months to check his kidney values. This is recommended every 6 months in a cat his age.

That certainly does sound like a big day for JJ! Vaccines, deworming and flea medication, and leg injuries don't cause sudden increases in water intake. Now, if JJ was kept at your vet in a cage without water for several hours for a drop off appointment, then it would be reasonable to expect him to drink a lot of water at home. If he wasn't dropped off away from water, I'd be more inclined to suspect another issue, such as a urinary tract infection. Diabetes and kidney disease can also cause pronounced increases in water consumption, but they would be highly unusual in a kitten as young as JJ. If JJ continues to drink excessive amounts of water tomorrow, then I would certainly take him back to the vet for evaluation. Your vet will likely want to at a minimum check a urine sample for evidence of infection. I hope that everything goes well!

He probably already has a full bladder before you give the fluids and then when you add in the extra fluids he needs to urinat right away. I would not be worried about this at all. Hope this helps. What you are describing (hard feces despite drinking and peeing, and drinking a lot of water) can definitely be caused by kidney disease, and that would be the number one concern. Other concerns would be diabetes, hyperthyroidism, megacolon, or possibly cancer. In terms of your medications comment, all medications have different times for how long they take to kick in, and how long they last. This can be changed based on hydration, age, kidney and liver function, and overall health status. It sounds like Jay might need to see a vet, based on your questions. Best of luck with Jay!

With the symptoms you are describing I would recommend having Oscar examined by your veterinarian and have further testing done to help determine what the problem could be. The kidneys may not be the problem. This could be infectious or if he ate something and it is now stuck in his GI tract could be the problem.
