My 6-month-old cat has a fever. Is Gentamicin safe? What about fever meds?

Human drugs can cause severe side effects in cats and even death. If you can not afford the testing then ask your Vet for supportive care, things like fluids under the skin and antibiotics for a longer course. In the IS pneumonia is rate in cats. Cats more commonly are chronically infected with viral infections or if they have chronic fevers were worry about Feline Leukemia, FIV and Feline Infectious Peritonitis. Ideally, since gentamicin can affect kidney function, Guddu should be rechecked by your veterinarian. Bloodwork can be submitted to assess kidney function. A urine sample should also be submitted. The symptoms described may be related or they may be coincidental and due to something else.

Unless the eye infection is caused by something else in the body, systemic antibiotics are rarely used or indicated. Ophthalmic antibiotics are much more likely to cure an infection of the eye in a timely manner. Sometimes what looks like an infection isn't actually caused by bacteria. It could also be caused by corneal abrasion or ulceration, allergies, foreign body, autoimmune disorder, etc. I also prefer other types of injectable antibiotics over gentamicin. It is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that can be kidney toxic and has a pretty long list of adverse effects. I only use it in cases that do not respond to safer antibiotics.

If Tikvichko truly has a fever (check by using a digital thermometer inserted about 1 centimeter in the rectum; cats are normally between 100 and 102 Fahrenheit) then he likely needs antibiotics to treat this problem. I'm not sure how it works in your country, but in the U.S. these are only obtainable with a prescription. Clavamox is typically a good choice for respiratory infections; your vet can prescribe it for you

Hello. I think the Azithromycin was a good next choice for an antibiotic. Clyde's bloodwork is not indicative of anything significant, although one of his kidney parameters is elevated. Blood markers for chronic infection/inflammation are in the high normal range, too, but we would expect this with a chronic fever. If he does not respond to this go round of antibiotics, a disease panel may be necessary, but make sure your vet also sends off some blood smears to see if any blood parasites can be identified. Hello. Thank you for reaching out to Pet Coach. I am not familar with the antibiotic that you specifically have mentioned. However, in the US we do use something that sounds similar, called Clavamox. Either way, all antibiotics should be given with food if at all possible to avoid upset stomach. Many cats have a reduced appetite when they have a fever, so it is not surprising that Haro Kitaru is not eating on her own. I am very sorry that she is feeling ill and has a fever. If you are able to give her a small amount of chicken or turkey baby food before administering the antibiotic that would be best. This will reduce the chance of causing an upset stomach.
