My cat is foaming at mouth, smacking, acting anxious. What's wrong?

Foaming at the mouth in a cat after medication is typically a sign that the medication was either bitter tasting to them or it just wasn't pleasant. You can try the medicaiton again, giving it slowly this time and see what response Kitty has. If he foams again, then you can ask your vet if there is another flavor that you can get this medicaiton in, that is more tolerable for Kitty. Best wishes and take care.

Mr Whiskas could have bad tooth or something else in his mouth that is occasionally causing irritation. It’s also possible that he’s eating something that has a bad taste like some kind of insect when this is happening. Some cats can have atypical seizures or other neurologic episodes where they act frantic and foam at the mouth. I would recommend making an appointment with your regular vet to have his mouth examined - if you’re able to video an episode to show the vet it might help determine what could be going on.

This almost sounds like focal seizure activity - sometimes cats will foam at the mouth and make chewing motions during a seizure. I'm wondering if her eyes seem different because she is actually unconscious during these episodes. Of course ingesting something that tastes bad could also cause something like this but it seems unusual for it to happen more than once. I'd recommend having a vet examine Mao Mao - if you can get a video of the episode it could help your vet determine what's going on.

He may have an injury or something stuck in his mouth that makes him painful and reluctant to eat. I strongly recommend getting him seen by a vet right away, even though he's feeling better. There may still be something that can be corrected to make him feel better, and if he has swallowed something he shouldn't have or injured his mouth by chewing something he may need veterinary care in order to heal completely.

Poor kitten! Excessive drooling like that can definitely be caused by nausea, as well as irritation of the mouth, throat, nose, or stomach. Getting into something potentially toxic or bad tasting, flea and tick treatments for dogs accidentally used on cats, or underlying illness can also cause foaming like this. I would definitely take him to another vet ASAP since it is so severe.

You should take Petunia into your vet for a health check and mouth exam. It would be a good idea to get her in a soon as possible (not an emergency, but first thing Monday) because if it is a dental problem, it will be very painful, and she will likely stop eating. Your vet can rule out other causes of these symptoms at the exam.

Hello. Roxie probably has some significant dental disease, & this is often accompanied by a condition called stomatitis, which is a chronic irritation of the tissues within the mouth. The exact cause is unknown, but it is often multifactorial involving bacterial infections & an abnormal immune system. Your history definitely points to this, but your veterinarian needs to confirm things. Treatment can be relatively simple with antibiotics & periodic use of steroids. Most important will be an initial examination & cleaning of the teeth under general anesthesia. In the worse case, all the teeth may need to be removed because they present an ever presence of antigens in the mouth that promote the painful lesions.
