My cat has foul breath, smacks lips, and won't groom. What's wrong?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | unneutered | 5 months and 30 days old | 5 lbs

3 Days ago my cat started to experience signs of lethargy, wouldn't eat or drink or move much. Yesterday he began to eat and drink a little more and move around as well as today. However, today he began smacking his lips moving his mouth up and down open and closed a lot and has very foul breath. His fur is looking terrible oh, he's not grooming himself. He seems to be getting better eating and drinking but still sleeping a lot and started doing the mouth movements

He may have an injury or something stuck in his mouth that makes him painful and reluctant to eat. I strongly recommend getting him seen by a vet right away, even though he's feeling better. There may still be something that can be corrected to make him feel better, and if he has swallowed something he shouldn't have or injured his mouth by chewing something he may need veterinary care in order to heal completely.
