My cat is foaming at the mouth and acting like she's choking. Why?

If it just happened once and is not happening again, that might be just something he ate that had a bad taste for him. If it happens again, it is more likely to be a chronic gum disease, this will need to be checked and treated by your vet.

I recommend to have your pup examined by the veterinarian. If you can catch one of these episodes on video, please do so to show the veterinarian. It's possible your pet is having a focal seizure though a cardiovascular problem could cause an altered mentation as well. Try to have her examined today if possible. I hope this helps.

Mr Whiskas could have bad tooth or something else in his mouth that is occasionally causing irritation. It’s also possible that he’s eating something that has a bad taste like some kind of insect when this is happening. Some cats can have atypical seizures or other neurologic episodes where they act frantic and foam at the mouth. I would recommend making an appointment with your regular vet to have his mouth examined - if you’re able to video an episode to show the vet it might help determine what could be going on.

Poor kitten! Excessive drooling like that can definitely be caused by nausea, as well as irritation of the mouth, throat, nose, or stomach. Getting into something potentially toxic or bad tasting, flea and tick treatments for dogs accidentally used on cats, or underlying illness can also cause foaming like this. I would definitely take him to another vet ASAP since it is so severe.

This definitely seems suspicious of an airway blockage. If this was the first time you've seen this, then it would be good to try and check inside his mouth to see if anything is visible. It's best to do this with two people - where one holds a flashlight and looks, while the other holds the mouth open. If you see something, then I recommend taking him to the vet to get it removed, because if you attempt to remove it at home, you have a chance of pushing it further into the throat. If he has had something like this happen before, then I would be suspicious of a nasopharyngeal polyp (a soft mass that can develop in the throat), which can cause them to choke every once in a while. This would have to be diagnosed and treated by a veterinarian. The other possibility is that he got his claw stuck in his collar. This happens sometimes when they are scratching and can cause them to panic like this. If he is getting better, then I would not worry too much right now. Poor Pye! Thank you for following up to state that he got some miconazole in his nose and mouth. This medication is only prescribed for topical use, and seems to only have minimal absorption if some is accidentally ingested. However, it can cause some stomach upset or even liver problems if enough is ingested. It's likely that Pye is foaming at the mouth because it tastes pretty terrible. I'm glad to hear that you've rinsed out his mouth! However, since I don't know how much he ingested, I'd recommend calling either the Pet Poison Helpline (855-764-7661) or the ASPCA Poison Control Center (888-426-4435) to discuss this problem with one of their veterinary toxicologists. Odds are good that this shouldn't cause any problems for Pye, but it's best to confirm with them the risk of causing liver problems based on how much of the miconazole that got into his mouth. Foaming at the mouth in a cat after medication is typically a sign that the medication was either bitter tasting to them or it just wasn't pleasant. You can try the medicaiton again, giving it slowly this time and see what response Kitty has.
