My cat fought: bleeding nose scratch & loose tooth. What to do?

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 2 years and 9 months old | 8.18 lbs

My cat JUST got into a fight and I noticed she had a scratch on her nose, and it bleed. On top of that, her lower canine seems loose, it practically out of her mouth, and there's blood around it. What should I do? Is it serious?

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. I would make sure you clean the scratch using a solution of saline and Betadine (mix together until you have a light brown solution) and clean the cut using this solution. As for the tooth, it may or may not fall out on its own. The entire tooth may come out, in which case, nothing will likely need to be done, or part of the tooth may come out and the remainder of the root will be stuck in the tooth socket. If the root is left behind the fragment should be removed. If the tooth does not fall out on its own in the next 2-3 days, I would recommend having a veterinarian examine her so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. Keep little Muse calm and quiet and schedule a vet visit as soon as possible to evaluate the tooth and get pain medication if needed. My cat was scratched in a fight. What to do if no vet is open?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is difficult to know the most appropriate course of action without knowing the extent of his injuries. However, the best thing you can do is to keep him as quiet as possible for now until you can have him evaluated by a veterinarian. He likely has trauma in multiple places which is why he is so responsive to the touch. Often times after fights they have injuries beyond what you can see from the outside. They would be able to check the extent of the injuries and recommend the best course of action but for now, I recommend that you rest him as much as possible and keep an eye on him to make sure he is ok. My cat has a loose, protruding fang. What should I do right now?

I would definitely recommend leaving it alone because you could cause some pain and injury by wiggling on it. However I would consider having your vet take a look at it because safe extraction if the canine tooth may be recommended to avoid having a huge hole left behind for foodstuffs to then get clogged into. If your vet extracts the tooth instead of just letting it fall out, the vet can then close the hole with suture. This is the best approach when dealing with diseases canine teeth especially, because this is the only tooth that can leave a hole that directly communicates with the nasal passages (oronasal fistula), so we take extra precautions with this tooth in particular. Schedule an appt with your local vet soon and I hope everything turns out well for your cat Zoe.

My cat broke a tooth and it's bleeding. Do I need an emergency vet?

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. If Nemo is not showing any signs of pain or discomfort he does not have to be seen by a vet immediately. Mild bleeding should stop within the next 30-60 min. However, broken canine tooth should be extracted as there is an increased risk of infection and chronic pain through the exposed tooth pulp.

Why won't my cat's nose wound heal and keeps bleeding for months?

Thank you for including the picture, it is helpful. I had a situation in a patient like Bongo that I found a tooth in (likely from a fight with another cat). But an object festering could be the cause of a non-healing wound. Also there is the potential of a growth. Less likely because he is so young, but still possible. I would encourage you to have him evaluated by a veterinarian soon. It is small enough that they may just recommend removing it all together and sending it out for a biopsy. Keep a close eye on it and if it does not improve in the next week or so, have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment though that is unlikely to be needed. My cat's whisker area is bloody and scratched. Vet or home care?

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It looks like a superficial wound or scratch. Luka may have lost one of his whiskers, it will grow back. You should clean this area twice daily with cotton buds and warm, boiled water or an antiseptic skin solution (for example 4% Hibiclens). As long as it is healing OK and it is not bothering Luka you can manage this at home. However, if you notice that the lip becomes swollen or painful, you should take Luka to your local vets for an appointment.
