My cat broke a tooth and it's bleeding. Do I need an emergency vet?

I recommend making an appointment with your vet when they open to take a look at it. Though she isn’t acting painful, it may become painful or infected. There isn’t anything you can do at home and no safe medications you can give for pain. If it is broken, she will likely need to undergo anesthesia to have the tooth removed. Keep little Muse calm and quiet and schedule a vet visit as soon as possible to evaluate the tooth and get pain medication if needed. It’s hard to tell if that adult canine is damaged or not- if so, dental X-rays or a dental cleaning and extraction may be recommended. If she seems not to want to eat, offer some canned food which may be easier to eat with a hurt mouth. I absolutely DO NOT recommend giving any sort of over the counter pain medication to Muse as they can be life-threatening and can interfere with medications your vet may want to use.

Oreo could have in addition to the broken tooth a jar fracture. I recommend he be checked out by a veterinarian as soon as possible. This is because the broken tooth can lead to a tooth root abscess as well as if the jaw is broken it will need some sort of stabilization procedure. In the meantime try feeding Oreo a very liquid diet such as a gruel of his normal food and plenty of water and keep it indoors at all times. Do not give any human pain medication as it can be very toxic to cats.

I just had a case like this last week! The broken tooth likely has root exposure. This is an open pipeline to the blood supply. I recommend having Johnnie seen by a vet tomorrow or Tuesday. The only way to fix it is to see a specialist in dental work (root canal). Otherwise it needs to be extracted (what I did for the cat last week). If she is acting normal (eating, drinking, playing, eliminating normally) I think you are ok to wait until your vet is open. If she won't eat and drink you should find a vet that is open and have her evaluated. Most times these situations are not emergencies unless the owner has a show dog or cat.
