My cat has a black spot on his eye. What's wrong and what should I do?

A blurry spot can mean that you pet either has a scar on the cornea or it could indicate a corneal ulcer, depending on how this looks. There is also the potential it could be nuclear sclerosis, if it is a deeper opacity that you are seeing. Please submit a photo of the eye in question for clarification on what this likely is, or have your vet do a physical exam to confirm. If it is a corneal ulcer, it needs to be confirmed with an eye test through your veterinarian and then treated with medication. Corneal ulcers however cause excessive blinking and eye discharge. Nuclear sclerosis is common in older cats, and I'm not sure how old your cat is, but they don't require any treatment.. And corneal scars are basically scarring from a previous corneal injury, which typically are permanent and don't require treatment. I wish you the best moving forward with your fur baby. Take care.

Your poor kitty! That looks very painful. Your kitty needs to see a vet soon for this problem. Cat scratches to the eye can be very serious. All that is visible in the photo appears to be inflammed conjunctival tissue. This may be the primary problem or more likely something is going with the eye or structures associated with the eye/orbit. Considering the pics you uploaded, I can say there is a deep and severe corneal ulcer with a possible penetrating injury. An immediate check up is required to confirm this clinical suspicion and treat appropriately. Antibiotic eye drops are certainly needed but a surgical intervention may be required.

What a beautiful face! It almost looks like this might simply be an "eye booger," so blink her eyes and see if it moves. If it moves, you can use a wet cotton ball and wipe her eye, this should wipe it away. If its not moving when she blinks, and its adhered to the cornea (front surface of the eye), as long as she isn't pawing at it or squinting like she's painful and as long as she's otherwise acting normally, just make an appointment at your convenience. If it seems to bothering her, though, get her in more urgently. If she's pawing at it at all, put an Ecollar on her to prevent her from causing damage to her eye. Poor Tiger! It sounds like he may have a corneal ulcer or very severe conjunctivitis. Eye conditions can be very painful and can quickly progress to emergencies, so Tiger should be seen by a vet right away, as an ulcer is unlikely to heal on its own. In the meantime, you can get Tiger an E-collar or "cone" to prevent him from scratching the eye and causing further trauma. I hope this helps and that all is well with Tiger!

I would suspect that he may have gotten into a fight with another animal outdoors, or he could have injured his eye. He can't keep his eye open because the eye is painful to light. He has to see a vet immediately. Any eye problem is considered an emergency because leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. Please take him into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. It is usually a result of a scratch (self-inflicted or from other pet) or blunt trauma. It is very important to treat these problems promptly, as they potentially may turn into infected ulcer, which is a very serious condition of the eye.
