My cat's urine is dark on cholangiohepatitis meds. Is this normal?

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Mediumhair | Female | spayed | 10 lbs

My cat is currently being treated for cholangeohepatitis with steroids and antibiotics. I noticed her urine was a dark color tonight. Do I need to make another vet appointment or is this normal for her condition?

Good evening. It must be hard seeing Relic sick. Although it can be normal for cats with cholangiohepatitis to have darker yellow to orangish urine, if this is a change for her since being prescribed her medications, it is probably best to consider a recheck. Some important things to consider on "how soon" to recheck is if Relic is eating and drinking on her own (preferably normal quantities) - if she is not, I would recommend a recheck within the next 24 hours if possible. Is she vomiting? If so, a recheck within the next 24 hours is also strongly advised.

My cat's urine is dark. Is dark pee a sign of dehydration or illness?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Pheobe. I agree that it does look dark. Has she had free access to water today? If she is a bit dehydrated, then the urine will be darker than normal. It does not appear to contain blood which is good. Offer her plenty of water and if it is still dark tomorrow, then she should see her veterinarian for a urinalysis. I hope this information helps!

These signs might be compatible with a urinary tract infection/inflammation. Stress related (idiopathic type of inflammation) infection and presence of crystals are the most common causes of it. These signs must be checked as soon as possible as urinary tract infection can be dangerous in male (especially neutered) cats as it can develop into a urinary tract obstruction/blockage. My cat has very dark urine and is licking a brown liquid. What's wrong?

Tiger may have a urinary tract infection or other issue causing dehydration and darker colored urine. I'd recommend having her examined by a veterinarian and also having a urine sample checked out. If necessary she can be given fluids as an injection to rehydrate her and be prescribed antibiotics to treat any infection that may be present. You can try offering her an all canned food diet to try to maintain her hydration. However, I do think she should be examined by a veterinarian as soon as possible. Why is my cat's urine dark orange? Is it a UTI or serious problem?

Cats urine is normally very concentrated, so a dark orange color could be OK. With a UTI, they tend to urinate more frequently, urinate outside the box and sometimes strain to urinate. If you see him doing this, then he needs to see the vet. If anything else is concerning, then it's best to bring him to the vet and they can easily test the urine and examine Mookie for any other problems.
