My cat with cancer had a seizure. Should I consider euthanasia?

Pet's info: Cat | Russian Blue | Female | spayed | 7 years and 10 months old | 11 lbs

My cat has metastatic breast adenocarcinoma. but has been well. Today she had a seizure. Is this a sign that I should consider euthanasia pretty soon. She is 7 years old, still eating, drinking, still herself other than the seizure. I do not want her to suffer in any way.

Seizures can be treated with medication, so I would have Ashie seen by a vet right away. It may be possible that antiseizure medications can improve her quality of life so euthanasia doesn't have to be considered at the moment. I would speak to the vet about the possibility of these medications. If she seizures again before you seek veterinary attention:
- do not put your hands near her mouth so you don't get bitten
- you can apply rubbing alcohol to her paws to cool her down
- monitor her at all times to ensure she doesn't harm herself moving around.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Seizures can occur due to many reasons that go from a toxicity, metabolic diseases, inflammatory diseases and even tumors. I highly recommend that you have Dessie evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Diagnostics that will be recommended will include bloodwork and advanced imaging such as an MRI. They would also be able to start her on anti-seizure medications to try to avoid the onset of more seizures. Usually anti-seizure medications are prescribed when 2 o more seizures occur in 1 month. Oh my goodness, I'm so sorry to hear what you and Patches are going through. Seizures can be caused by many things- as she is diabetic, checking her glucose was an excellent first step. Seizures can sometimes be caused by other organ dysfunction, such as kidney or liver disease. In her case, the sudden onset of so many seizures in an older pet makes me strongly suspicious of something serious, like a brain tumor. I would recommend euthanasia in her case. Seizures can be painful and disorienting, especially when they are uncontrolled. I'll be keeping you and Patches in my thoughts.

What to do if my 17-year-old cat has seizures from loud sounds?

If your cat is having seizures, an exam with your vet or at the nearest veterinary ER is strongly recommended. Go as soon as possible. Repeated seizures can cause permanent damage or may kill. Seizures can be caused by infection, trauma, toxicity, tumors or other neurologic conditions. It is important the seizures are controlled temporarily while diagnostics determine a cause that can be treated. At 17 years old, quality of life and euthanasia may need to be discussed if the seizures cannot be controlled or a diagnosis cannot be reached.

My senior cat has frequent seizures. What medical steps to take?

If his seizures have increased to every other week, then it is likely time to start some anti-convulsant medications to try to decrease the frequency of the seizures. I am attaching a link to a handout on siezures below. My kitten had a seizure and is lethargic. What should I do now?

If she had what appeared to be a seizure, I would place a small amount of karo syrup on the gums and get her seen right away as her sugar level may be low. This could easily cause the seizures with low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). Sick kittens oftentimes do not eat enough and will secondarily get hypoglycemia. My cat had a seizure. How do I know if she's okay without a vet?

If she seems perfectly fine now...eating, drinking, peeing, pooping and walking normally with a normal activity level (not lethargic)... and this was her first episode, there is nothing that your vet could do other than routine screening bloodwork to rule out a liver/kidney issue or low blood sugar as the cause of the seizures. Your vet may also prescribe rectal valium suppositories to have on hand to treat any future seizures. Cats and dogs are usually not started on seizure medications unless they have several seizures a month or a prolonged seizure. Hopefully Rey won’t have any more episodes, but if she does, a short video clip may be helpful to bring to your vet. Good luck!
