My cat has epilepsy. How can I reduce seizures without medication?

Seizures can be treated with medication, so I would have Ashie seen by a vet right away. It may be possible that antiseizure medications can improve her quality of life so euthanasia doesn't have to be considered at the moment. I would speak to the vet about the possibility of these medications. If she seizures again before you seek veterinary attention: - do not put your hands near her mouth so you don't get bitten - you can apply rubbing alcohol to her paws to cool her down - monitor her at all times to ensure she doesn't harm herself moving around.

If his seizures have increased to every other week, then it is likely time to start some anti-convulsant medications to try to decrease the frequency of the seizures. If she seems perfectly fine now...eating, drinking, peeing, pooping and walking normally with a normal activity level (not lethargic)... and this was her first episode, there is nothing that your vet could do other than routine screening bloodwork to rule out a liver/kidney issue or low blood sugar as the cause of the seizures. Your vet may also prescribe rectal valium suppositories to have on hand to treat any future seizures. Cats and dogs are usually not started on seizure medications unless they have several seizures a month or a prolonged seizure. Hopefully Rey won’t have any more episodes, but if she does, a short video clip may be helpful to bring to your vet. Good luck!

Anything is possible so I will not say that could never happen, but it is not likely. The way that medication is metabolized in the body it needs to be given twice a day to have the desired effect. The overall dosage may be able to be dropped but he would still need it twice a day. Sorry he has this issue and I agree, he is very handsome!

I'm sorry to hear that Maci is having this problem! Idiopathic epilepsy, which refers to seizures without any underlying cause, is rare in cats but can occur. Other possible causes would include a brain tumor or neurologic disease of some kind, as there would not be any evidence of these issues on normal bloodwork. If you are concerned and want to try and get a definitive diagnosis, you can request referral to a veterinary neurologist for further testing, which would likely include an MRI or CT scan of the brain as well as a CSF (cerebrospinal fluid) tap. If going to see a specialist is not an option for you, your veterinarian should still be able to prescribe medication to control Maci's seizures even without knowing what the underlying cause might be - I would definitely recommend this at this point, if she is having seizures every other day.

An MRI is the best way to see the brain to find out if there is an abnormality in structure or tumors that could be causing the seizure. If you are unable to pursue the MRI discuss this with your vet. Medication to treat/prevent seizures may be an option but will not cure the disease will only alleviate seizure symptoms. Good luck.

Sorry to hear about poor Blitzen. Seizures can have many different causes, but I would not be concerned about the tapeworm medication as a cause. Seizures can happen due to a body function not working properly, or from a problem within the brain. It is possible that the previous head injury could be the cause, but really difficult to prove and likely nothing that can be done for it now. There could also be a brain tumor, infection or some congenital defect causing this. The truth is that we often don't find the cause of the tumor, because it requires special imaging that is usually too expensive for most people. However, it's worth having a vet do an exam and possibly check the blood for any abnormalities. Sometimes we can find the cause and fix it relatively easily. If not, the vet could prescribe medication to prevent more seizures, so it's still worth the visit. I hope that helps and you get this under control soon.
