Why is my cat with calicivirus acting strange and losing weight?

I would recommend feeding Alex a high quality cat food, such as Royal Canin or Hills Science diet. If he becomes congested from the calicivirus, he may not want to eat because he can't smell his food. I would suggest then gently warming up really smelly wet food, such as sardine or fish based in order to tempt him to eat.

Hi, I think she should be able to have some antibiotics to prevent secondary infections if you notice that there is some discharge that could indicate this. She could have some fluids and also some food to encourage her to eat if she is not doing so ( Hill’s recovery). Hope this helps,

Calicovirus can cause many symptoms but balance loss is very concerning. I recommend a revisit to your vet, a full blood panel to rule out any internal issues and an ear exam to ensure this is not affecting her balance

Renal failure often causes cats to lose weight. The waste products that build up in the blood because the kidneys can't properly eliminate them cause nausea and gastritis (inflammation in the stomach) and sometimes even ulcers in the mouth. Talk to your vet about trying some medications to manage these conditions - either omeprazole or famotadine are often helpful, as well as the anti-nausea drug Cerenia. Also the drug mirtazipine can be used to help stimulate his appetite. Unfortunately it sounds like he has multiple problems that may be difficult to manage concurrently. I'd also consider running a bacterial culture of the nasal discharge to try to focus the antibiotic therapy and ensure that an effective drug is being used.

Hello. I am afraid I need to disagree with you concerning George is not acting sick. He is the classic definition of a very sick cat. Vomiting, excessive water intake, eating strange material ( called pica ), & weight loss screams that poor George may have some serious issues going on. He really needs to be seen, & soon. Poor guy. I would first suspect that he may have either a bacterial infection or a parasite infection. Have his stool tested by your vet to determine which is present so that he can get the proper treatment. Poor guy. I hope Sammy feels better soon. In the meantime offer him tuna and white rice to help settle his stomach and plenty of water to help prevent him from getting dehydrated. Coughing, congestion, sneezing, lack of appetite, discharge from the eyes and nose, and lethargy can be signs of a respiratory infection in cats. When cats can't smell their food, they won't eat, and that may be why he is losing weight. Gently warm really smelly wet food such as sardine or fish based.
