My neutered cat has a stuffy nose and is tired. Could it be cat flu?

Hi, It could be cat flu if he hasn’t been vaccinated. If not he could have inhaled something irritant. Is there anything new in the environment ? It is difficult to advise without checking him over. Cat flu is extremely infectious but other conditions could be foreign body inhalation, allergy, nasal polyps or bacterial/fungal infections. If he is lethargic I would suggest to have him checked over.

Poro Mau Mau! It could be that he is suffering from a respiratory infection causing his runny nose and bleary eyes, but it could also be allergies. Without seeing him in person, I can't say for certain. But the runny nose could be the cause of his decrease in appetite. When cats can't smell their food, they won't eat. I recommend gently warming really smelly wet food such as sardine or fish based to tempt him to eat. You can also try using a humidifier or bringing him into the bathroom with the door closed while you take a hot shower - the steam and humidity help to break up congestion and temporarily relieve symptoms associated with respiratory infections. Without knowing the cause of his systems, I do not recommend giving him any supplements as they may be the improper treatment for him. Have him seen by a vet first thing Monday. I hope this helps!

He may have an upper respiratory infection, which is quite common in cats. It is hard to say for sure without examining him myself. You can try using a humidifier to break up any mucous. As an alternative you can place him in the bathroom with the shower running for 5-10 minutes 2 x daily. However he ultimately will likely need antibiotics to clear up any bacterial infection that may be present. I would also recommend getting him on antiviral medication (I.e. lysine powder or gel from your local pet store or vet clinic) to treat for a suspected underlying viral infection. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Andrew! Causes of nasal congestion are: upper respiratory infection either viral or bacteria, fungal infections, and cancer. If the congestion has been going on for awhile he should be evaluated and at a minimum started on antibiotics. The weight loss concerns me in an older cat. I recommend full blood work: CBC/Chem/T4 and urine. Common causes of weight loss in older cats are: kidney or liver disease, hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid), diabetes and cancer. Yes, nasal discharge can reduce the perception of smells and therefore reduce the appetite. Try to clean the nose with a wet cloth and offer different type of food. Upper respiratory disease in cats are quite common and sometimes can resolve without treatment but if Trio isn't eating and is getting thinner means that he might need specific treatment and support. Poor guy. I would first suspect that he may have either a bacterial infection or a parasite infection. Have his stool tested by your vet to determine which is present so that he can get the proper treatment. Poor guy. I hope Sammy feels better soon. In the meantime offer him tuna and white rice to help settle his stomach and plenty of water to help prevent him from getting dehydrated. Autism is not currently recognized in cats. I think it sounds like Fatass might have an upper respiratory infection. These viral infections can cause sneezing and nasal discharge. Treatment is usually based on alleviating symptoms unless here is evidence of a secondary bacterial infection. Watch for green or yellow discharge from the eyes or nose.
