My cat has calicivirus and is always hungry, what food helps?

Hi there. George may need antibiotics if his virus infection is leading to a secondary bacterial infection. These can explain weight loss, etc. He may also have ulcers around or in his mouth making him uncomfortable. It mate be that he is sick enough for hospitalization and fluids, etc to make him feel better. I hope this helps.

Hi, I think she should be able to have some antibiotics to prevent secondary infections if you notice that there is some discharge that could indicate this. She could have some fluids and also some food to encourage her to eat if she is not doing so ( Hill’s recovery). Hope this helps,

You can give Charlie an L-lysine supplement - this is an amino acid that has been shown to help the immune system fight off respiratory infections more effectively. Enisyl and Viralys are both good brands, and can be purchased over the counter without a prescription - just follow the dosing instructions on the label based on your cat's weight.

Good question. Hill's A/D prescription diet is energy dense, has high digestibility, is low in fiber, and has a smooth texture. Other alternative over the counters would be just about any kitten food brand that is high quality (hill's science diet, evo, eukanuba or royal canin), or you can try the Iams Max Cal, which has higher calories and is somewhat palatable (varies from pet to pet). If the vomiting is still persistent she will require injectable fluids and nausea medications by your vet

I would recommend feeding her a high calorie, soft mousse such as royal canin recovery which is highly palatable and energy dense and can be very useful to promote weight gain during recovery. Ensure she is up to date with deworming medications also

It sounds like your vet diagnosed her with an upper respiratory infection. Depending on the virus that causes this, the signs can appear in the eyes, nose or mouth. There is a virus called calicivirus that can cause sneezing and ulcers in the mouth. These can be quite painful and make the cat not want to eat. I typically recommend feeding a canned diet so she can lap it up rather than chew it. A/D is a good diet for this. It is made by Hill's and is available by prescription through a veterinarian. I also will sometimes prescribe pain medication to keep them comfortable and eating while they have ulcers in their mouths. I would recommend calling your veterinarian in the morning to discuss these things. We don't want her to go too long without eating.
