My cat's eye has a bleeding injury and a visible hole. What's wrong?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | unspayed | 4 months and 17 days old | 1.5 lbs

Hello there! One of our young cats has been pawing at/blinking a lot in her left eye. We noticed what looked like a little blood so we examined her eye and noticed an injury. There is not object in her eye, and we have no idea how she got hurt, but whatever it was created a small visible hole in the corner of her eye. We are ready and willing to take her into a vet, but wanted to utilize this resource as we are concerned they will simply give us a rinse or instructions.

Considering the pics you uploaded, I can say there is a deep and severe corneal ulcer with a possible penetrating injury. An immediate check up is required to confirm this clinical suspicion and treat appropriately. Antibiotic eye drops are certainly needed but a surgical intervention may be required.
