Why does my 14-year-old cat have a swollen eye that looks like a black eye?

Yes, it does look like she suffered some trauma to that eye. From the photo, it looks like the eye probably cannot be saved. Kitty should see a veterinarian as soon as possible for an exam. The pictures are quite dark, so it's not possible to actually see the eye, but this type of case is usually due to a scratch to the outside of the eye, or a foreign body stuck under the eyelid. Scratches to the outside of the eye are not usually easy to see and we often need to apply a special stain to the eye in order to detect it. For now, it's best if you can flush the eye with normal saline. Saline flush can be bought at the pharmacy, or supermarket in the eye care section. Flush the eye 3-4 times daily and gently wipe away the discharge with a warm/moist cotton or cloth. It's also possible that there is an infection in the eye, or conjunctiva that is causing this. Hello. Yes, this is absolutely painful to your cat. Poor Willow needs veterinary attention now as there is probably a tumor growing behind the eye. Other than removing the eye ( enucleation ), there may not be very much more that can be done for her, but at the very least, I would have her on pain medications. Poor Bella. In one picture, her eyes look open and normal but the other picture they definitely look very irritated, watery, and not all the way open. If she is currently looking like the abnormal picture, then I am highly concerned about her eyes. She could be suffering from severe allergies, conjunctivitis (infection), herpes, or even corneal ulcers. You can try to flush out with artificial tears and give her a Benadryl but if she isn't improving I would have your vet take a look at her. Your vet will be able to determine what the cause is and get her started on the proper meds to help her feel better. I hope this helps. Ori is such a handsome boy! Swelling and irritation of the eye can indicate an eye infection and/or an injury to the eye. He may be rubbing the eye because it hurts him. Unfortunately I cannot say without seeing him in person if the swelling will go down on it's own or not, and any eye problem is an emergency that requires an immediate vet visit. This is because the eye is such a delicate and important structure, and leaving problems untreated can lead to vision loss. In your picture, I can see that one is is smaller than the other, indicating the swelling. I recommend taking him into a vet asap to get this checked out. I hope this helps.

Poor Tiger! It sounds like he may have a corneal ulcer or very severe conjunctivitis. Eye conditions can be very painful and can quickly progress to emergencies, so Tiger should be seen by a vet right away, as an ulcer is unlikely to heal on its own. In the meantime, you can get Tiger an E-collar or "cone" to prevent him from scratching the eye and causing further trauma. I hope this helps and that all is well with Tiger!
