My cat ate pine needles. Are they toxic? What symptoms to look for?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 7 years and 4 months old | 7 lbs

Reading that pineneedles are toxic. My cat tried to eat this one... or she may have actually eatten another.... do i need to rush her to the vet? Whats the signs i need to watch her for as far as toxicity goes? I seen her trying to eat it and grabbed it before she could but she did have it in her mouth... it doesnt look like she bit through it and broke it so im not sure if she wouldve gotten any of the toxic sap, but im not sure if it was the only one. Please help. :(

Yes, you are correct that pine needles do cause toxicity in cats but it's not serious side effects such as death. I would not rush her into a vet now, I would monitor her for signs of toxicity. The oils from the needle can be irritating to the mouth, causing excessive drooling or vomiting. You can try flushing Mirz's mouth with cool water. Pine needles are also difficult to digest, and they can cause GI irritation, vomiting, and possible GI obstruction or puncture if enough are eaten. If you do see vomiting, you can try withholding food for 12-24 hours, then feeding a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, she vomits the bland diet, she refuses to eat the bland diet, you see blood in her feces or vomit, she has diarrhea, and/or she becomes very lethargic, then I would rush her into a vet.     I can't find any reliable resources that mention liver failure associated with ingestion of pine needles in cats. They can certainly cause irritation to the GI tract, either from the sharp parts or from pine sap.

Since he is uncomfortable and unwilling to eat, I think it would be a good idea to get him seen as soon as possible. Oils from fir trees can irritate the inside of their mouths, causing drooling and vomiting and ingested pine needles can collect together creating an intestinal obstruction or potentially puncture the intestine, leading to a painful condition called peritonitis. I feel it would be best to get him seen in case he gets worse or perhaps ate something else you weren't aware of. As you probably know, cats cannot go for long without eating before developing hepatic lipidosis, or fatty liver disease. Your vet will do an exam, possibly x-rays and labwork, and based on these results, will be better able to tell you what is wrong and how best to treat it.

My puppy is eating pine bark and needles. Is this dangerous?
Pine needles and bark are not toxic, but the needles contain some oil that can cause irritation to the the stomach. You may see a decreased appetite, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. If these occur for longer than 24 hours, Luna should see a vet for treatment. If she eats a large amount of bark and/or pine needles, it could cause more severe damage internally and potentially cause painful constipation. If she seems in distress when trying to have a bowel movement, she should see a vet for treatment. I would try to prevent her from eating this. You can try to fence off the shrub, take Luna out on a leash, or remove the shrub. It is possible that she will outgrow it, but this breed tends to get themselves into trouble by eating inappropriate things for several years!

As long as she only got a tiny amount, there shouldn't be anything to worry about. However, these plants can cause gastrointestinal symptoms and burning or irritation in the mouth, along with breathing difficulty, coma, or even death, if a sufficient amount of leaves is ingested. Keep an eye on her, if she will let you look in her mouth, check for any irritation, if she starts displaying any adverse symptoms, such as drooling, vomiting, lethargy or loss of appetite, get her in to see your vet right away.

Is Pine-Sol harmful to cats? My kitties were exposed to the fumes.
Pinesol can definitely be irritating to the respiratory tract, but if they aren’t coughing then it probably hasn’t caused much problem. As far as other concerns if they had licked it before it was dry then it can cause mouth ulcers and gastrointestinal problems, and possibly organ problems. If you have any concerns they they are not eating well or vomiting then they should be seen immediately, otherwise if they didn’t consume any then the likelihood of a problem is slim. This could be because she has developed a gastrointestinal obstruction or has gastrointestinal upset for example. I recommend that you have Chloe evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to check for these abnormalities so that she can be treated accordingly. My cat ate oleander. No symptoms after 24 hours, should I worry?
Hello, oleander contains a toxin which affects the hear. Other signs include nausea, vomiting, drooling. However, signs are typically seen within an hour or two after ingestion. If Misty is currently doing ok, then I would continue to monitor her for any evidence of weakness, collapse, lethargy, or vomiting and bring her to your veterinarian if you notice any of the above. The good news is that the tree is only mildly toxic Mowgli, but the needles will be an irritant to his stomach and GI tract. That would be causing the vomiting. I would try a home remedy to see if that helps with the vomiting.
