My puppy is eating pine bark and needles. Is this dangerous?

Withhold food for 12-24 hours. Allow small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte. Resume feeding a bland diet (1:1 ratio of plain boiled boneless chicken and plain white rice). Many things can make pet's have an upset stomach: parasites, new foods/treats, viral infections, eating something they shouldn't have, toxins, organ disease or even intestinal blockage. The pine cones will generally only cause a problem if they are ingested. They will cause a blockage and this typically appears as vomting, not wanting to eat and being lethargic. The main concern I see if how small Pippy is. Small breed puppies are prone to low blood sugar (which is an emergency) so you really have to make sure they are eating and drinking normally. I generally recommend any pet that has been sick beyond 24 hours to see a veterinarian and that whats I recommend to Pippy too. She's been sick for 2 days and she is very small. Try to get her seen today and bring in a stool sample. The doctor will likely check her for more common reasons like parasites but may recommend further diagnostics. Also, switch her to a bland diet of 25% boiled white meat chicken and 75% plain boiled white rice. Feed her this for a few days as it will help to intestines to relax more. Yes, you are correct that pine needles do cause toxicity in cats but it's not serious side effects such as death. I would not rush her into a vet now, I would monitor her for signs of toxicity. The oils from the needle can be irritating to the mouth, causing excessive drooling or vomiting. You can try flushing Mirz's mouth with cool water. Pine needles are also difficult to digest, and they can cause GI irritation, vomiting, and possible GI obstruction or puncture if enough are eaten. If you do see vomiting, you can try withholding food for 12-24 hours, then feeding a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, she vomits the bland diet, she refuses to eat the bland diet, you see blood in her feces or vomit, she has diarrhea, and/or she becomes very lethargic, then I would rush her into a vet. This could be because she has developed a gastrointestinal obstruction or has gastrointestinal upset for example. I recommend that you have Chloe evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to check for these abnormalities so that she can be treated accordingly. It does have potential to cause vomiting and diarrhea as it can be difficult to digest and pass. Just monitor her appetite and for further episodes, if they are noted then I would get her checked but otherwise she should be fine.

This eating all sorts on non-food items is called "pica". There has been same research into this and the results were that in many cases dogs who show this behavior have gastrointestinal problems. Actually the salivating would signify nausea, possibly a reaction to the pine needles, and the gagging as well. Take your dog off all food until tomorrow. Make sure he has fresh water available. If he is better tomorrow morning do the following: Put Ren on bland food for two days, such as boiled white rice and boiled white boneless chicken meat, fed in small quantities over several feeds and then transition back to regular food slowly over a few days. If this does not clear up the vomiting or if the vomiting increases, or if your dog gets lethargic, or is not better in the morning, he needs to see a veterinarian/PetER for an exam as there may be something more serious such as an infection going on.
