My kitten ate food with maggots. Is he sick? What should I do?

Cats can be finicky eaters, and I don't imagine that Cassie would eat dried out wet food, especially if she had another source of food to eat. I wouldn't be concerned that she has eaten maggots. Best of luck.

It's gross, but it shouldn't cause any harm. Maggots are just a type of larvae. You should try to figure out how they got in there, though, since they wouldn't have developed there - they had to have been deposited there by something else drinking the water or being near the bowl.

If you keep finding maggots there is a relatively large infestation, You should shave the hair around the wound and wash it well with disinfectant removing all the maggots. If you cannot do that you will need to take your cat to your veterinarian for a clip, clean, disinfect, and exam. Maggots can kill your cat. Neither you nor your dog will get maggots unless you have the respective blue bottle or similar flies in your house and a wound into which the flies can lay their eggs

Many times kittens with upper respiratory or eye infections can get maggots. Removing the maggots and treating the infection is the first step. The kitten may also have intestinal parasites, which need to be treated based on the type of parasite. Feeding egg yolks is not helpful, you will need to use a kitten milk replacer for nutrition and hydration. I would recommend that you have the kitten examined by a vet for the best chance at saving its life. What a cute kitten! Offering a meat flavored baby food may help entice him to eat. Warming his food may also allow him to smell it better which will help his appetite. Offer him small meals several times a day as his stomach is too small to eat a lot at one time at this age. Definitely have him rechecked by your veterinarian if he's not eating by tomorrow. I'm so sorry you lost a kitten! No, they likely won't get sick from it. Cats have been known to eat their young before (even though it's not common) and have been ok. It's gross, but your cats should be fine.

Poor Maggie. There are several things that can cause vomiting and lethargy including hairballs, parasites, upper respiratory infection, eating human food, foreign bodies +/- Gi obstruction, certain viral and bacterial infections and much more. I would stop feeding her milk as most cats eventually get to where they cannot tolerate it. I would try to keep her inside so she can rest and offer her different types of food to try and entice her to eat. If she is still refusing to eat tomorrow or the vomiting is continuing, I would have your vet take a look at her. Your vet will be able to do a fecal, blood work and even x-rays if needed.
