My cat has maggots. Will my dog or I get them from her wound?

Maggots are usually very clearly seen when you look at the wound, it also smells extremely bad. this looks like an abscess, i don't know if she has been seen by a vet or not, if not then you need to take her to the vet ASAP, she will need antibiotic treatment.

It would be best to take your kitty to a veterinarian to have them remove the rest of the maggots. The vet can then also check inside the vagina and retrieve any maggots. As your kitty was not spayed there is a possibility that she has a uterine infection which enticed the flies to lay eggs on her genital area. Please take eher to a veterinarian this evening, or a petER.

Capstar will kill maggots, but the maggots will continue to come back since they are caused by flies laying eggs in a necrotic wound. The maggots are not the issue here, the wound is the problem, and it should be addressed first with a vet.

That looks like a little hot spot or area of infection on his foot. With there being a lot of flies around I worry that they will further irritate the wound. Sometimes flies can even lay eggs in an open wound and then the wound becomes infested with maggots (fly larva). I would recommend cleaning the wound thoroughly and trying to keep your dog inside until it heals (or at least keeping the flies away from him). If the wound does not seem to be healing quickly I would recommend taking him to be checked out by your vet. Sometimes these wounds need to be clipped and flushed clean and Blue may need antibiotics to help it heal.

Just wanted to add that you can use Capstar (a flea tablet that is available over the counter) to kill maggots very effectively in cats - so this is something that you could try as well. Just give the tablet by mouth, and the maggots will die within 30 minutes to an hour in most cases.

This requires therapy as soon as possible for the maggots and the likely underlying infection. These maggot wounds are treatable, but turpentine and Betadine won't kill them all and will actually make the wound worse. They are best killed with camphor powder, but the maggots need to be pulled out from in the wound, or they will cause a severe infection. In order to pull them out, the dog often needs to be sedated. For this and other wound treatment, I highly recommend you take him to a vet doctor. For now, you should flush the wound using a syringe or other dispensing device with normal, clean, warm water for five minutes. This may not be easy, because dogs tend to hate this and will try to run away. I recommend having someone help you with this and holding Brando to make sure the wound gets flushed well. Infection is the biggest concern with these wounds; so after flushing, it's best to apply an antibacterial cream to the wound and a bandage. In order to keep the wound clean, it's best to flush the wound 1-2 times a day and gently wipe away any big crusts - make sure not to scrub the wound, because this can make it worse. Apply the antibacterial cream after each flushing. I hope that helps and Brando gets better soon.
