My cat's anal sacs were expressed, material is yellow. Is it infected?

Brownish color to the anal gland secretion is normal. A little reddish tinge to it is not abnormal as small amounts of blood can be produced during the expression. If you saw significant redness or frank blood during their expression, this might be something worth investigating with a vet should you start to see any clinical signs of illness. Hope this helps.

Normal anal sac fluid is clear or pale yellowish-brown. When it's green and white, that can be a sign of anal sac inflammation or infection. I would have Koji seen by a vet. If he does have an infection, he will need antibiotics to treat it.

These glands are normal and provide some of the scent and lubrication to feces while pets defecate. In some instances one or both of these glands can become infected and need to be treated with surgery and/or antibiotics. If Sokka is scooting, having painful defecations or licking at the area, has swelling or bloody discharge then have him evaluated immediately. It could be dis charge from his anal glands. Normally, the glands are emptied during the act of defecation. Sometimes though, the glands become impacted then infected. An abscess will form then eventually rupture and drain. If there is no redness, swelling or discharge around the anus, look for swelling elsewhere. If he is an outdoor cat, a bite wound abscess is a possibility. They can be difficult to spot without a close exam and maybe shaving a swollen area. Ideally, he should be physically examined by your veterinarian. Especially if he is lethargic, feverish or not eating.
