After expressing my cat's anal gland, is brown/red discharge normal?

The glands are situated inside the rectum and they have fluid that is released when they have a bowel movement or when they are scared. If there was bright red blood I would be concerned they are infected. If it was dark brown, it is normal contents. I hope this helps. Kisses to Suga!

Since it is a new color for Casper recheck them in 1 month. But I wouldn't be worried. Worry if the material is green or bloody, that indicates infection. While the smell of anal sac contents is typically quite bad, the material should not be yellow to white. It's normally a brownish color, and so I would be concerned that the color of the expressed material is a sign of infection. I would have Asai seen by a vet for this, as she may need antibiotics to treat the infection.

It sounds like the odor you are describing is discharge from Ed's anal glands. Anal glands are a scent marking gland (as you could guess) since they produce a very strong odor. It is normal to animals to express anal gland material when very stimulated or startled. However, I would recommend having your vet examine Ed's anal glands to make sure they are not overly full. I am not sure what type of vaginal discharge you are discussing. If there is a little blood post spay that can be normal. Blood can leak into the vaginal region. This is normal a few days post spay. However if this last I would be concerned and he needs to go back to the vet. Sometimes anal glands can get impacted and infected. I would recommend having a vet try and express them to make sure they are normal.

Anal glands are scent glands inside the anus that are expressed with defecation. If she was scared suddenly they can accidentally release the anal gland material. The other possibility is that she is starting with diarrhea and some leaked out. Keep an eye on the litter box and see how her stools are. This could be mucus in his stool or possibly material from his anal glands. If he is behaving normally, you can offer a bland diet for a few days and minimize stress as much as possible. If the discharge worsens or if Napoleon becomes lethargic, develops diarrhea, stops eating or starts vomiting, then you should have him examined by your veterinarian. A pheromone product, such as Feliway spray or plug in diffusers, may help to decrease any anxiety or stress.
