Why is my cat leaking brown material from a hole next to her anus?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If the brown liquid was very smelly (like rotten eggs mixed with poop) then she likely expressed her anal glands. Anal glands are scent glands inside the anus that are expressed with defecation. If she was scared suddenly they can accidentally release the anal gland material. The other possibility is that she is starting with diarrhea and some leaked out. Keep an eye on the litter box and see how her stools are. That could typically be due either to anal gland infection/inflammation or diarrhoea with liquid feces. A check up is necessary if the signs are not resolving, despite a change in the dietary regime (bland diet with chicken and rice for the next 3-4 days). Antibiotics and anal gland expression may be needed.

I'm guessing Good has watery diarrhea, although anal glands could also produce a small amount of bad smelling fluid that could leak from her anus. I would recommend seeing a veterinarian if you aren't sure what this fluid it. If it seems to be diarrhea parasites would be a possible cause. Anal glands can become infected or impacted and produce more fluid than normal.

It sounds like it may be fluid from the anal glands. Most cats do not have anal gland issues but some do. I recommend to have the anal glands expressed by his veterinarian. He may need this done periodically. There is also a supplement called Glandex that will help his body to naturally express the glands during a bowel movement. You will feed this to him every day. It could be dis charge from his anal glands. Normally, the glands are emptied during the act of defecation. Sometimes though, the glands become impacted then infected. An abscess will form then eventually rupture and drain. If there is no redness, swelling or discharge around the anus, look for swelling elsewhere. If he is an outdoor cat, a bite wound abscess is a possibility. They can be difficult to spot without a close exam and maybe shaving a swollen area. Ideally, he should be physically examined by your veterinarian. Especially if he is lethargic, feverish or not eating.

It possible you are seeing the opening of the anal glands with some waxy exudate built up in the opening. Cats will generally keep themselves clean but some are better than others. Not all cats require treatment for anal glands but you want want to call your veterinarian and ask. Also, you may be able to keep the area clean by soaking it with a warm wet cotton ball or a gentle cleaning once a day. I hope this helps.
