My cat is acting strange after getting human Valium. Is it an overdose?

Sorry for my delayed reply. Is he really 10kg? That is a big cat! Even for a cat that size 5mg is a bit high. At the very high end of the dose he would only get 4mg. I think what you are seeing is over excitement from the high dose. Just let him "sleep it off". If he doesn't seem better in 24 hours he needs to see a vet. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Camilla! Disorientation, anxiety, panting and not acting normal are normal post seizure. This period can last up to 24 hours. Sometimes the recovery period can be different after each seizure. We can not prescribe medications with out examining Camila. If your Vet has prescribed valium for Camila then I would follow the instructions they provided. There is no interaction with valium, phenobarbital and potassium bromide. If they didn't you will have to get the dosing from them. As long as she isn't having any more seizures I would hold off on any additional medications right now and let her recover. If she has 2-3 seizures in a 24 hour period she needs to be seen by a Vet. I wish you the best!

She is having cluster of seizures that ideally should be treated by your veterinarian at the clinic/hospital. What you are seeing now is most likely ''a post ictal' phase, that means the signs (pacing, restless, seems blind and so on) in the period of time after the seizure episode. These signs could last even 24hours. The major concern is that she could go into another cluster of seizure episode and have severe secondary effect from it. I would strongly advised to have her treated at the clinic until she is completely out from these acute episodes. The toxic dose for this drug is quite high, but what you are describing definitely sounds like toxic reaction and requires emergency veterinary care to prevent Luis from getting worse. The veterinarian will likely want to have him on IV fluids and keep him for observation over the next 24 hours, since this is the most critical time. There is really nothing you can do for him at home, so it's best to get him to the vet as soon as possible. Also, I would consider not using piperazine again in any of your pets. Yes, that is way too much Amitriptyline and an overdose like this can be fatal. If she is having seizures that are not controlled then she needs to go to the ER. Amitriptyline shouldn't really even be given twice a day. It is not really a anti-seizure medication so I am not sure why your vet prescribed it. I suggest you refer to this information sheet for more information. Even if she only ingested 6mg, that's double the highest recommended dose for a cat her weight. Too much clonazepam can lower the blood pressure, leading to weakness or collapse. In a senior cat, low blood pressure can be very serious. I'm not sure why you have no way of getting her to a vet, but she does need to see one immediately to make sure everything is ok. I would see if you could have a friend or family member take you into the vet, or call a cab or Uber to have her seen now. Best of luck.

Hi, I see you've posted again...you have confirmed that this is a massive overdose of meloxicam for a dog that size and it would definitely cause her to be lethargic. Overdoses are most concerning for causing stomach and/or intestinal ulcers/bleeding. It can also cause significant damage to the kidneys. For these reasons, I recommend you take Polly to the vet immediately. There are medications and treatments that can keep this from getting worse and it's imperative that they are given soon. However, it's worth double-checking the syringe. Liquid meloxicam is usually given with a small 1ml syringe. The 1ml may be written as 1.0ml, which could be confused with 10.
