My cat ate Clonazepam and is acting weird. Is it an emergency?

When antibiotics are ingested in toxic amounts, it can result in mild to severe signs ranging from gastrointestinal signs (e.g., drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, inappetance, discolored teeth), metabolic signs (e.g., skin lesions, liver failure, kidney failure, etc.) to central nervous system signs (e.g., tremors, seizures, death). Oh no, that was naughty of Heaven Lee to eat the Klonopin! Klonopin is used in dogs as a short term treatment for epilepsy. As long as she is at least 1kg (2.2 pounds), she will have ingested at most the highest recommended dose of the medication according to Plumb's Veterinary Drug Handbook. There are also no interactions between Xanax or Klonopin. She should be fine from this ingestion, but you may see some side effects of the drug such as sedation or ataxia. If you see any significant effects, such as GI effects (vomiting, constipation, diarrhea), or increased salivation, I would have Heaven Lee seen by a vet.

Nikolai should be okay as far as toxicity goes. 300mg is a lot but not at the point at which you would see liver toxicity or other adverse health problems. However, that being said, if he is still lethargic and acting abnormal, I would recommend taking him in to be seen by a veterinarian and have his blood tested to establish a baseline as well. Hello, thank you for your question. Without knowing the weight of your cat it is very hard to know what possible side effects are expected. Generally, phenobarbital when giving at a higher dosage than expected can lead to sedation. You may also notice that your cat is drinking/urinating more and has an increased appetite. If your cat develops any symptoms such as severe vomiting, sedation, weakness, or collapse I would recommend seeking veterinary care. Hope this helps!

Hello. At that dose & with a single acute ingestion, I would not expect to see anything in the dog or older cat. But if the kitten ingested the 20 mg, then you may see symptoms of serotonin syndrome. This could include vomiting & diarrhea, & neurological signs such as ataxia or incoordination while walking, agitation, tremors, mild seizures, vocalization, disorientation, or even sedation & lethargy. You could take the smallest cat to your veterinarian for possible decontamination, or just keep a close watch on everyone for any concerning signs I have mentioned.
