How to calm a skittish neutered cat thrashing in his recovery kennel?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 8 months and 3 days old | 12 lbs

My cat was neutered today, he was born a feral and is super skittish. I bought a kennel to keep him safe in while he recovers but he does nothing but beat himself against it until he gets tired. My husband and I are at a loss as to what to do and we cant get close to stop him or else we get the claws.

Hi, it is difficult for a semi feral cat to accept to be confined in a cage. It is probably easier to have a large room or just stay indoors where he feels he has control over his territory and resources. I would give him more space and the possibility of hide while making sure he does not lick/groom the surgery area.
