My cat is jumping after neuter. Should I confine him for recovery?

Hello! My cat was neutered about 15 hours ago, and he's already back to normal! The problem is, he jumps to my sofa to set there whilest I'm not in the room, and I found him on my bed as well. I don't want to scold him cause I feel sorry for him, and I also don't want him to run! Do I have to confinde him to make sure he doesn't climb up my sofa! I've checked him and he's alright, but I'm still worried! Thank you! Q

Hello, Im glad to hear Felix is already doing well. He should be fine if he is kept quiet for the next several days. To prevent jumping and excessive activity, you may need to confine him to a small pen or crate. However, if this is stressing him out to much, you can also try to confine him to a small room. Ultimately, if he is still not keeping quiet, then just watching him for any bleeding while he wonders around would be the best in order to prevent him from being too stressed.     I would be worried he has a fever. This is not normal after surgery and makes me concerned about an infection. I would recommend to take Felix to an emergency clinic tonight if possible. If you can't get to one tonight, go to the vet first thing in the morning. Try to get him to drink water, offer him food you think he will eat. Make sure he stays warm. If the doctor is worried about infection, Felix will need antibiotics and fluids. I hope he's ok!

    Make sure Felix doesn’t eat and drink twelve hours before the surgery. He should be kept quiet and inside for several days afterwards to make sure he recovers without issues. He should be eating and urinating normally. If he isn’t then you will need to bring him back for a recheck. Usually there are no problems and he should be healed and back to normal within a week. You should keep Ayden's activity restricted. He may not need to be crated but he should be kept in a bathroom with his litter box, food and water for 7- 14 days. Activity may delay healing. Some pets will be more active once they wake up from sedation. This is usually temporary and will usually wear off in a few hours. It is very important to try to keep his activity minimal. I recommend to have him contained in one room with his litter box, food and water. Try to pick a room that does not have tall furniture or anything that he may try to climb or jump off and on. You may need to hang out with him until he calms down. Playing classical music may also help and decreasing stimulation in general. If he is still hyper tomorrow, you may want to call his veterinarian and ask about a sedative. I hope this is helpful and please feel free to post any additional questions.

Hi, it is difficult for a semi feral cat to accept to be confined in a cage. It is probably easier to have a large room or just stay indoors where he feels he has control over his territory and resources. I would give him more space and the possibility of hide while making sure he does not lick/groom the surgery area.

My cat is jumping after neuter. Will stitches pop when I'm not home?
Cat neuters are one of the few surgeries that do not require stitches and most vets do not place stitches. If your vet did not give any special instructions about stitches, then I wouldn't worry about it; it's expected that a cat will be a cat. If the vet did give some special instructions, then follow them as best as you can, but stitches are often placed assuming that there will be some tension due to running, jumping and licking; so I wouldn't be too worried about him causing major damage. It's good to have a look at his scrotum every day for the next 10 days. If you happen to notice excessive swelling (some swelling is expected in the first few days), pus, or any other abnormalities, then I'd recommend taking him in for an exam by your vet. The chances of a serious complication is very small, so I wouldn't worry about leaving him for the day. They usually recover quickly after this procedure and rarely have complications. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Zeno. It sound like you are doing everything right. It is best to keep him very quiet for the first 24-48 hours after surgery. Too much activity can lead to swelling at the surgery site. A small amount of oozing can be normal. If it continues or gets worse, then you need to alert your veterinarian. My cat is going crazy with his cone after neuter surgery. What to do?
Most cats do hate wearing the cone at home. It is tough to watch them act in this manner. However, in order to help prevent him from both injuring himself trying to get it off and also keeping him from getting to his incision, it may be best to keep him in a small room like the bathroom for tonight, then call your vet on tomorrow and ask for a sedative to give him at home while he still recovers from surgery. My cat is jumpy, affectionate, and not using litter after neuter. Is this normal?
I would say he is a little bit in pain from the surgery and therefore waited to pee until now. Being jumpy is also normal, it is a sign of stress, as he was in an environment unfamiliar to him, he got injections and he woke up with pain. So he would feel apprehensive. Usually there is no problem with the litter coming into contact with a wound, it will likely not cause infection and you do not need to use a special litter.
