My 3-week-old bottle-fed kitten gets sick after milk. What's wrong?

It certainly sounds as though Zaytoune isn't feeling well! At 3.5 weeks old, we need to be sure kittens are eating every few hours to keep their blood glucose (sugar) levels adequate. If blood glucose becomes too low, animals can become lethargic and even begin to seizure in severe cases. Possible causes of vomiting could include gastrointestinal upset from his medication, diet change, a virus, etc. Since he is so young and not keeping milk or food down, I would recommend taking him to an emergency veterinarian as soon as possible to assure that his blood glucose levels are appropriate.

From what you are describing it sounds to me that Bucky was simply Over fed. kitten stomachs are very small, so you should aim to feed small amounts more often. For. 3 week old 300g kitten I would advise feeding for 14 ml fed 6-7 times per day. Hello, & thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Make sure what you are feeding the kitten is an appropriate kitten milk replacer. Kittens this young are not able to regulate their temperatures well, so make sure you have her on a heating pad set on low with a towel on top. There should be an area for the kitten to move off if it gets too warm. Make sure you are not overfeeding the kitten. A kitten needs 2 tablespoons ( 30 mls ) per 4 ounces ( 115 grams ) of body weight daily. Divide the daily amount into equal portions for each feeding & fed every 3-4 hours until bedtime. Stimulate the genital area after each meal, but do not be concerned if she does not have a BM each time. You can try feeding her a congee, which is often tolerated by the sickest kittens. Take 1-2 cups chicken broth ( low or no salt added ), add 1/4 cup white rice & a tiny sliver of fresh ginger. Boil for 2 hours. While cooling, add 1 Tbsp good quality protein powder - egg or casein, not soy. Stir together very well. The mix should be a bit thick. Drip into kittens mouth 1/2 - 1 ml at a time. Hopefully she will start to turn around. Just keep at it. Good luck.

I am sorry your Kitty is not feeling well. Unforutnaly with the information you provided it is hard to give really good advice. I would recommend taking her to a vet as soon as possible. If she is young ( under 4-5 weeks) I would recommend bottle feeding her with kitten milk replacer every 2-3 hours. If Kitty is older than this you can take dry kibble and mix with warm water every few hours. I would not recommend giving milk to older kittens because it can upset Kitty's stomach. I would also recommend a good round of deworming . Hope that helps

Hello, If the kitten is weaned, milk can cause gastrointestinal upset as they are no longer supposed to be drinking it. Vomit and diarrhea could be caused by this, parasites, viral infections, or intestinal blockages. Foaming at the mouth can be a sign of abdominal pain and nausea. First of all you need to stop the cow milk, i recommend switching her to ready made kitten dry food. It sounds as she is suffering from a gastrointestinal condition, possibly an infection. it could also be due to ingestion of a foreign body material. i would recommend taking her to the vet the first chance you get, she will need to be checked first, if the vet thinks it's a simple gastrointestinal infection she will need an anti vomiting injection, antibiotics and a special food for a few days in order to get better. if the vet thinks it is more serious she will need a blood test and possibly an ultrasound in order to find out what is wrong.

I recommend getting your cat seen by your vet or an emergency vet right away. Cats need to eat, if they go more than a few days without eating they can develop serious liver problems which can be fatal. Continuous vomiting for so many hours is very exhausting and dehydrating, so your kitten likely needs some medical intervention to get better. Your vet will do an exam, labwork, possibly x-rays, and based on these results, your vet will have a better idea what is going on and can better advise you about treatment options.
