Should I add charcoal directly to my cat's litter for odor control?

Baking soda is definitely a viable option. I wouldn't add any sort of out side products into the litter. I would just choose a litter that is effective at disguising unwanted odors. The Arm and Hammer Double Duty and the Ultra are both really effective in my opinion at accomplishing this. There are also covered litter boxes that have little filters on top of them that help contain some of the odor. Another thing you might want to consider trying is to get one of those deodorizer jars and simply leave one open right next to the litter box. This will absorb a good portion of the unwanted odor. Hopefully, the new litter alone will solve your not-burying problem. Hope this make sense.

The only air "fresheners" we worry about with cats are essential oils. Don't forget that cats' sense of smell is much better than ours, so an air freshener that is too strong can actually deter a cat from wanting to go in the room with it. The most important thing in keeping the room smelling good is scooping the litter box at least once daily and cleaning the entire thing (changing the litter completely) at least once weekly. I also noticed that you have Creamcicle listed at unneutered. Getting him neutered will also decrease the odor of his urine which might be helpful. Good luck! I don't recommend to use this in case the wood has some sort of chemical treatment. Remember that Sadie will walk on the wood and then lick her feet later. It's safest to stick to products made for pets so that you know there are no hidden chemicals that could be toxic. Also, some cats do not like any litter other than normal, clay based litter. I recommend to offer two boxes, one with clay based litter and the other with the new litter and see which one she prefers. Otherwise she may start eliminating outside of the litter box. I've never heard of this litter causing a burning smell before, but if it is strong enough to bother you or is affecting your cat, switching back to the other litter may be a good idea. You can also see if an air purifier in the room helps as well. If you notice any signs of respiratory distress in your cat such as sneezing, trouble breathing, panting, coughing, etc, then moving Sweetie to another well ventilated room and changing the litter is best.

Hartz, in my opinion , is not a great brand but it would not hurt trying these out. The best odor prevention, however, is using clumping litter and removing the soiled clumps and the bowel movements every day. Your cat might not like the smell of any litter deodorizer and then might avoid using the litter box. Start with a tiny amount to get the cat used to it.

Scents aren't necessarily dangerous, but cat's have a much more sensitive sense of smell than we do. If your kitties decide that the scent of the litter box liners isn't nice, they will decide to go potty somewhere else! Also, some cats are very sensitive to certain scents and can have upper or lower respiratory issues with this. It can also cause flare ups in cats that have been diagnosed with feline asthma. So, I would not recommend using scented bags, but if you do, just watch them all very closely for any changes.

I think this should be safe for your young kittens to use. They may be inquisitive at first about the new litter but they probably won’t ingest enough to cause an issue.
