Can I use wood fireplace pellets as cat litter? Is it safe for my cat?

As far as I am aware only sawdust that is treated with certain chemicals would be carcinogenic when inhaled. I doubt that the OkoCat litter is a risk for your kitties, but if you are afraid that it might be, why not change to "normal clumping cat litter or the cat litter made from plant material (which is not clumping, I am afraid).

The wood litter typically is not large enough to cause any major problems and if she chewed on them and made them even smaller. I would monitor for now and if you begin to notice any symptoms such as lethargy, vomiting, abdominal pain, etc., then I would recommend taking her in to be examined by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I've never heard of this litter causing a burning smell before, but if it is strong enough to bother you or is affecting your cat, switching back to the other litter may be a good idea. You can also see if an air purifier in the room helps as well. If you notice any signs of respiratory distress in your cat such as sneezing, trouble breathing, panting, coughing, etc, then moving Sweetie to another well ventilated room and changing the litter is best.

There is no specific product I know of designed for the purpose you have suggested. In general, we don't want to do something that might discourage the cats from wanting to use the litter box as you intended it to be. If you have a cat that is eating the litter, stop using it right away and switch to a different product, or a different medium (newspaper clippings, plastic litter, etc). Hope this makes sense.

Their dust free paper non-clumping kind would be okay. The main objective is to use a litter that is less likely to get into the small incisions on her toes in case there is an open area. Any traditional clay or clumping litter is NOT recommended. Litter in the form of pellets that don’t break apart is what you are looking for. You can also use shredded paper. Some cats can definitely have issues with dusty litter, it can cause flare ups of asthma and may make your cat decide to go potty somewhere else. Though once it settles, it may not cause issues unless your cat is a very aggressive digger. I would recommend staying with the same brand of litter you used before, or you can look into non-clay litter options, like Feline Pine or Yesterday's News. If you do decide on a different type of litter, I would put it in a second litter box so that Chloe has the option to choose which type of litter she prefers.
